Phuket: It's Not That Far From Laos

in #beersaturday4 years ago

I love Jolly Pumpkin so when they collaborated with Gigantic Brewing Company I knew I had to try it. Phuket: It's Not That Far From Laos has a delicate color and is golden yellow with streams of carbonation that bubble to a thin white head.

The aromas are complex and well developed with loads of lime, unripe pear, and the classic pineapple tinted notes of Jolly Pumpkin funk. These all erupt from your glass as they are carried on the streams of carbonation.

The flavor is light, lively, and quite dry due to the inclusion of Jasmine Rice and Palm Sugar in the mash. It has a very earthy sour funk that’s herbal and forward. I get a slight sweetness and some tart notes that are balanced and help cut some of the dryness. I also noted some heavy acidic notes most likely from the lime.

The mouthfeel is surprisingly light and refreshing. I was expecting something a bit heavier with all the ingredients that packed into the recipe. The drying effect with the bit of funk make feel like a classy beer that’s almost more cocktail than beer.

I really enjoyed this beer. I have a feeling it was pretty expensive, but since I got the bottle for free I can’t really comment on the ‘value’ that I received.

Cheers,

Very interesting. I have heard of Jolly Pumpkin before, but I have never had any of their offerings. Granted I try to stay away from Ann Arbor as much as possible anyway! I am not a fan of pineapple, so I am not sure how I would feel about this one. Great review!

Haha, I’m not a wolverine fan either. Jolly P is an awesome brewery. Their stuff can be a bit pricey so that’s off putting sometimes. However, I have e found some gems over the years. They also have good brunch at the Ann Arbor location. It might be worth checking out sometime.

For the food and beer alone I might bite the bullet some day! :) Also if the Spartans are playing there...

That’s my guy. Go Green!

Great looking bottle and the !BEER looks great too!!

they have amazing artists working for them.
