#BeerSaturday - Dolly Sour and Kenny Porter from Two Birds brewing in Melbourne, Australia

Who doesn't love Dolly Parton?

And Who doesn't love Kenny Rogers?

And who doesn't love Islands in the Stream - a great Karaoke duet - a great gravel voiced Kenny and Dolly's classic twang. Also did you know it was written by the great (sort of) Australian band The Bee Gees? And that it was originally written for Marvin Gaye?

But what if Dolly and Kenny were beers - I mean how could that be wrong?

I can only assume this was Two Birds Breweries thinking when they released these two beer together earlier this month. The instructions were that much like Kenny and Dolly they would more than hold their own by themselves but should be drunk together (and maybe even mixed) to get the best results.

So if Dolly and Kenny were drinks what would they be. Well Dolly to be light and spitzy and fun and Kenny would be richer, deeper and be the beer equivalent of a country drawl. So of course Dolly is a Raspberry Sour and Kenny a Porter.

But before we talk about the beers let's discuss the can art - like poster for a concert in the late 70's there is a lot to like here, and designed to be shown together, cartoon versions singing to each other.

Let's start with Kenny Porter

This looks and smells like a tradtional porter - nothing to special. It has a great smooth mouthfeel
with little carbonation - much liek Kenny's laid back singing style. There is just a hint of a lingering roasty malt taste - all in all a better solid brew.

Then onto Dolly Sour

It's a light pinky colour and smells of fruit - in particular raspberries. The taste is light, not too spritzy it has a wave of sweetness which gives way to a sherberty sourness and then the aftertaste is sweet again. It's bubbly it's fun, it very very enjoyable - I think we all know who that reminds us of.

And what if you mix them together - Pour the Dolly Sour into the Kenny Porter and what happens? Well it works, Dolly dominates Kenny (is anyone really surprised by this?) like someone harmonizing over bass notes it's add depth and excitement to the whole thing.

I have to say I really enjoyed this concept from Melbourne brewery Two Birds - Whilst it was a great marketing gimmick it was also way more than that - the two beers actually reminded me of the Kenny and Dolly and they did indeed work as stand-alone beers and together.

And remember this is part of #beersaturday organised by @detlev - it's an awesome weekly beer soaked get together - the details can be found in this post

Oh and let's face it now you want to listen to Kenny and Dolly dont ya?
