Biomimicry Inspirations aims to bring you closer to the principles and biology of nature without getting lost in the science. This can be especially useful for biomimics, circular economists, circular designers, urban planners, architects, process managers, and all professionals looking to integrate nature-inspired solutions!

Today is a super hectic day, as I am packing for the European Biomimicry Alliance meeting in Austria on Monday. Representatives from Biomimicry Germany, Biomimicry Switzerland, Biomimicry in Denmark, 7Vortex (designs and creates knowledge ecosystems), and several of us from Bioversum - Nature Inspired Systems are getting together for to talk about the latest in biomimicry and future collaborations. Curious what comes out of it!
In addition to our meetings, we will have two very special activities!
The first is a visit to the Alphabet des Lebens exhibit, an educational project with nature-inspired design which showcases 26 design principles abstracted from strategies nature uses to survive and thrive on this planet--known as Nature's or Life's Principles, which I talked about in Episode 2.
The second is the presence of Dr. Dayna Baumeister, the co-founder of Biomimicry 3.8. She will be giving a lecture at the Werkraum Bregenzerwald, in addition to her time with us. This is my first time meeting Dayna, so I am extremely excited!
After the meeting, I am heading to Vienna for some Bioversum meetings and to start a collaboration with Fryraum, a company that builds free space for individualists and free spirits. The co-founder and I have a shared love for building interspecies co-creations, such as my dream of an Urban Plantasy. Can't wait to start brainstorming new projects!

Cuscuta - The Golden Creeper !

They say a "weed is a plant whose virtues have not been discovered." @steemflow reveals the benefits of the parasitic Cuscuta, and from a biomimicry perspective, highlights relationship in an ecosystem. When doing an iSite, you want to identify the relationships found: competitive, cooperative, parasitic, mutualistic... This will help find their functions and uses in built systems.
African Fish Eagle

We move from plants to animals with this first-hand experience with the African Fish Eagle. @joansteward does not go into biological detail, but it is a great start at recognizing and becoming familiar with a species. You could say this is a mini iSite, where she goes into what she observes and has learned from the visual behavior. For biomimics, you start here, then deep dive into the biology of the functions witnessed.
Focus Stacked Macro #96 - Fly's head

Detailed photos is a godsend to really understand the mechanics of a specific species function. @brianhphotos brings us the Fly's head in ways I bet most of you have never seen before. The more I look at the photos, the more I wonder what exactly is the function of each area, which is exactly what you should be thinking as a biomimic. I look at the photos, then do research, then back to the photos, then sketch out the function, then more research. Having this level of details is super useful!
Parasite, predator, decomposer... three different species each with a specific function. How do they carry out those functions? How can those functions be used in a given design?
Think about it, do a little research, then let me know what you come up.
