I originally bought into Bitcoin because it felt disruptive and I wanted to be part of the evolution. After a year or so, I started to feel more like a speculative investor, watching the price rise and dip while wondering how high it would go.
More and more I started reading about people calling it "speculative" with no practical use as a currency, and I became worried because I thought the purpose of Bitcoin was being lost as it became a way for traders to make money in the short term instead of USING the Bitcoin.
Have you felt this as well? Is it just me?
Either way, I came to the realisation today that Bitcoin is going to be around for a long time because it is different things to different people.
People with disposable incomes with money to invest want more money. Always more money. These people are likely to treat Bitcoin as a short term investment.
People who don't trust their governments or who live in a communistic society want to store their money away safely away from their government, so for them Bitcoin is a good longer term investment.
People who have been recently burned by their government and inflation - Greece for example - see Bitcoin as an alternative safe haven for their money moving forward.
People who have trouble accessing money due to physical shortages or increasingly empty ATMs (India) see Bitcoin as a banking system that works for them instead of against them.
Lovers of technology and forward thinkers willingness to use Bitcoin drives businesses to accepting it, creating visibility and bringing in more users (Japan).
People who see an economic crash about to hit see it as a hedge against their current fiat system.
Me, as of today, see it as all of the above. We can't keep pointing at a single reason as to why Bitcoin is amazing... it's beautiful versatility and many functions to different types of people in all walks of life is what makes it an amazing technology worth sharing and talking about.
