If you haven't had a chance to check out Mr. Robot, I cannot recommend it more highly. You can check out the first season here at USA Networks. One of the biggest themes of the show is the idea that there is a powerful cult--the top 1% of the top 1%, and the radical and unfair power they have in this world.
! Sound familiar?
It should, because this isn't just a TV show--it's the world we live in.
The richest and most powerful people on this plant, from politicians like Hilary Clinton, to big banks like HSBC are ALLOWED to openly violate the law, and not be held accountable in anyway. They can break the law, kill people, steal billions, and nothing will be done.
And these are not isolated events--it's just business as usual.
What can we do in a world where our political system have been completely corrupted? Where gangsters in suits get to strut around and proudly laugh at the poor who are struggling everyday just to keep up and keep a roof over their head? What can we do when we try to use our civil liberties to exercise our rights only to be violently beat down to go back to business as usual the next day?
We can fight back.
By using digital currencies like bitcoin, we refuse to participate in their corrupt economic system while building out a new, better and more egalitarian system of money, and economic exchange.
If you really want to make a difference, voting sure as hell isn't going to do it--but buying bitcoin, encouraging people to use it from a political stand point, and creating real dialog about forcing the system to change from the outside is the real key.
I would also add that decentralizing as many aspects of life as possible would go a long way to wrestling the power away from the elites. Supporting and growing the new decentralized services that are popping up is a great way to take back our power. BTC is a big piece of the puzzle, but developing things like SIA, The Safe network, Storj, and of course STEEM will start allowing people to abandon the large corporations that help cement the power of those at the top.
Also, we can't afford to replace one royalty with another, we need to make crypto safe and easy for the average human and that may be our biggest challenge we face.
Absolutely! I think Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle (as money runs the world) but it is also about breaking down those other power relationships too. IPFS, Storj, STEEM, and the whole slew of decentralizing technologies are going to let us take back the power of the internet and technology for everyone, and not just the elites.
Thanks for commenting!
I agree, decentralization is a major concept that can disrupt the power elite. Whether it be through alternative currencies or diverting your money away from status quo banking, using cash more than credit cards etc. The only voting that matters is votes cast here on steemit or the votes you cast with every dollar you spend. Try to spend more in your local economy (flea markets, farmers markets, used items) and less through (E-)Corp's minions. It may often be less efficient, less convenient and a bit more expensive, but doing so takes a small bit of power away from the "too big to fail" crowd and puts it in the hands of your peers and neighbors. It isn't an overnight solution but the more people shift their thinking and awareness away from "national / federal" organization towards local contexts the better off we'll all be. Slowly try to extricate you and your family from the matrix and stop being a cog in the machinery of the corrupt controllers that dictate so many aspects of your life. Start to question more rather than blindly accepting what you're told.
The issue of personal choice and how people become corrupted and accepting of evil is a major theme in Mr. Robot, particularly in the character of Angela.
