Crypto Mining Overloads Infrastructure In Small WA County

Cryptocurrency mining is putting an undue amount of pressure on the electrical infrastructure of Douglas County, a small territory in Washington state, CNBC reports.

Crypto miners are flocking to Washington to take advantage of the state’s cheaper electrical costs, creating a need for more data infrastructure to keep up with the higher energy demand. The price per kilowatt of electricity is around four cents in Washington state, as opposed to the average of seven cents in the rest of the US.

Port of Douglas County Economic Development Manager Ron Cridlebaugh responded to the problem by stating plans to add 100 megawatts of data center infrastructure to the county.

Cridlebaugh said in his CNBC interview:

"Our infrastructure is actually being put to the test. We're full...It's going to take some time to catch up because growth has been so quick.”

This is why I chose to invest a little more upfront in the mining rig I'm currently building. I chose NVidia hardware and pursue lower power consumption equihash coins. I believe after addressing the scaling and usability of bitcoin some steps might have to be taken to reduce it's electrical footprint.

I’m not so sure if that’s possible to reduce its electrical footprint. The only way to solve this would be to reduce mining. This would increase the prices of crypto already mined.
Resteemed!

All we need to go is be more sustainable. Houses with solar panels and a mining setup that doesn't strain the system could hopefully be in our futures.

Reducing mining will increase price and increase in price will increase mining. So I don't see how this may work out.

I was not aware of this problem. This post is very interesting, every day i learn something new, thanks!

This is wonderful

There is a saying, that you cant eat your cake and have it, since the situation has turned out this way, my opinion states that there are 2 options

  1. 👉 They can work towards making the electricity more sustainable by increasing the megawatts generated, since they need it to stay in business

2.👉 Reduce mining just like @milano1113 suggested

Its a situation that needs immediate addressing, in order to prevent future black out in the state
