The OG version of Bitcoin

Magic Internet money problem

It's been 16 years ago since the creation of Bitcoin back in 2009. The internet was very different to what we know now. The IPhone has been on for a few years now and the first versions of Android were just getting started. Another player who was making waves was social media. Facebook was already been going on for 6 years and the infamous movie "The social network" was going to be launched withing a year.

So how was the internet community behaving back then, well, another big change was the creation of wikileaks and pressure to get Spotify was starting to get traction against the well developed P2P protocol, Bittorrent. After the failed heist of the Pirate Party servers to preserver the sovereignty of net neutrality out of the control of the global governments. Hacktivism was definitely on the rise and the sentiment that a new internet needed to be built was going on.

However, I look at the internet as an economy that was coming of age. Paypal still ruled the world and eCommerce was growing exponentially. But still blogging was the medium that people seemed to build a brand. Wordpress dominated the websites and an alternative to the private social media networks and froogle campaigns about the internet community was being exploited by having our data sold to the highest bidder.

How the internet looked in 2009

The Ad economy was also at an all time high, and many individuals wanted to build websites and platforms that would allow them to monetize their content outside of these huge giants. This is where the need of a native digital currency came about. The ad business was monopolized by advertising networks that sold packages of CPC (Cost per Click) and CPM (Cost per Mille/Thousand) views.

Bitcoin with their nearly infinite division (by eighth) held the power to fix the advertising problem. Content creators aka bloggers were able to hold their own servers with Wordpress and own branding and domain and be able to jump the middle man and directly with advertisers and get paid to the penny for their performance using a Magic Internet Money platform.

The future was decentralized commerce

Just like P2P the idea was to have websites advertised on other people website and calculate more modular and exact advertising budget based on performance without the need of a platform. A fully open source distributed networked made like the blogging community and not just having communication protocols like trackback but also a descentralized settlement layer to pay each other without a third party business.

The trackback protocol was a protocol that will notify when someone mentioned your blog from his blog. This was a more advanced and proper way to respond. The idea is that you will keep the traffic on your own site while still be able to work yourself through a community and earning money from blogging.

Skip back to 2025 and I am seen a completely different narrative, and unfortunately the problems from then had been completely ignored and Bitcoin is the further from their original goal. Not only has Bitcoin failed but also all the other Altcoins, and even if a few attempted to build a bridge like Brave Browser, but even if Brave has had some success in its use. I am not sure the advertising-crypto aspect has really picked up with the major advertisers of the world like Godaddy, VPNs, or other prominent web vendors.
