Bitcoin: There's a "new money" in town... how does it compare to "old money"?

in #bitcoin7 years ago

One of the best short ~1 minute introductory videos I've used to pique people's interest in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, is this one...

...which is a great parody of a PayPal commercial originally aired at the 2016 Super Bowl.

The first twelve seconds of the Bitcoin parody video are a throwback to 1994 when NBC anchors were confused about what the Internet was. Fast forward 20+ years and it is quite laughable now that everyone uses the Internet. However, it's hard for newcomers to digital "new money" to understand some of the differences. I'll expand on the points outlined in the parody video above a bit further in more seriousness to give some basic highlights for the average Superbowl-watching audience.

OLD MONEY

  • "Is centralized": It is largely controlled by central banks or very few people in power.

  • "Is fiat": A longer graphical explanation can be found in a few minutes here; but in short, it's a type of paper money that is only backed by laws to have value. It cannot be traded in for gold locked in the vaults of the Federal Reserve, despite what you may think.

  • "State issued": Created and printed by governments.

NEW MONEY

  • "Is not a dirty word": People love talking about new forms of money like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Steem, etc. and those topics are usually in the top trending Steemit tags.

  • "Isn't paper, it's progress": The code supporting currencies has the potential to change, and the rules governing "new money" are highly adaptable for the benefit of its users.

  • "Is decentralized": Processing and creation (mining) of these currencies is often distributed across different countries, computers, and interests.

  • "Gets better every day": Many newer and smaller cryptocurrencies are building upon the technology of larger currencies to try faster, more anonymous, more secure, or more power-saving solutions every day and the online community is learning from these to improve as time goes on.

  • "Is all people": It's created and mined by people, not governments.

... there's a new money in town.

And other than Bitcoin, there's also many other cryptocurrencies to explore! I hope this trailer makes Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies more exciting. Please share with Steemians and friends, and let me know if this gets them excited to learn more!
