Employee Data: What is my staff data worth to cybercriminals?

The chief job of the CISO and security operations centre (SOC) teams in any organisation is to protect the business's assets, data and intellectual property. Nevertheless, in contrast to management and the related security teams' efforts, the reporting of company data breaches is becoming a regular occurrence, with the most recent, at the time of writing, being Dixons Carphone in the UK.

While these articles usually provide details on the number of compromised customer accounts (5.9 million payment cards and 1.2 million personal data records, in the case of the Dixons Carphone breech above), not much attention is ever given to the potential value of the data.

Furthermore, ensuring that customer information and data is secure can often mean that the protection of staff members does not go much beyond installing antivirus on their workstation, and possibly a filter on their web browser, leaving many members of staff and their details exposed to potential compromise.

However, assuming cybercriminals are looking for 'the Big Score' in the form of large, customer databases, would they really bother attacking smaller, less consumer facing companies? Surely the money is in big data dumps? Well, perhaps not. Research suggests that cybercriminals can get rich by compromising your companies users, too.

A report by Intel Security Group’s McAfee Labs entitled: "Hidden Data Economy” provides figures taken from a combination of years of close work with law enforcement, and areas of the internet, such as Alphabay and Crypto Market, where stolen data is hidden and sold. Some estimated prices include (data from The Telegraph)

  • Stolen credit and debit cards: $5 to $30
  • Login credentials for a bank account containing just over $2,000: $190
  • Login credentials for an online payment service, such as PayPal: between $20 and $50 for account balances from $400 to - $1,000 and between $200 and $300 for balances from $5,000 to $8,000
  • Login credentials to hotel loyalty programs and online auction accounts: $20 to $1,400
  • Login credentials for online services such as Netflix: $0.55

So what can a company do to protect both its customers and its own internal users and staff?

LevelNet – the cyber security threat detection solution your company needs

LevelNet goes beyond simple antivirus and helps protect a company's user base, which can sometimes be overlooked with the majority of IT budgets being spent on the big projects, and regulation compliance requirements.

The LevelNet platform supports various business goals, including the following:

  • The only threat management solution to protect your users against Zero-Day attacks in 30-180 seconds
  • Vulnerabilities that are confirmed and approved by a number of verified antivirus products before being added to the platform
  • Complete visibility of any malware found and transparency of all scans made across a system
  • Real-time scanning and analytics, incorporating automated reporting and audit trail
  • A secure, tamper-proof vulnerability database
  • Reduced reporting time and processes in relation to vulnerability checks
  • An endpoint security app for desktop and mobile, with dedicated corporate services

The LevelNet platform offers a very cost effective solutions, with a very low antivirus license cost if it's paid by tokens, as compared to comparative products on the market. Companies can purchase tokens directly on the platform, backed by a smart contract which will give them a finite amount of time for the hunters to work on the application to be tested.

LevelNet platform grows and get stronger with the completely free, decentralized antivirus application which provides mass market penetration.

Given the increased risk to companies from cybercrime nowadays, and the ease at which cyber criminals are able to compromise unprotected users, it makes sense to install LevelNet within the enterprise - a truly next generation threat management solution.
