Running masternodes in the crypto world offers the opportunity to make money with no or very little effort on your part to generate and maintain a steady passive income.

To start you must find a digital coin that offers masternodes and falls into your budget. DASH/PIVX/NEM master nodes are unaffordable to most nowadays.
The key is to do masternode shopping on "useful" crypto's.

Look for a coin with a low supply + plenty of room for upwards growth = low cap under the radar so MN's will be worth your time and effort in the long run.
Pick a coin and create a passive income while supporting the coin's network.
