For a technology to be widely used, it needs to have one outstanding quality. The technology needs to have a working mechanism, which the end user does not have and usually does not want to know. And the outer simplified interface through which the end users are going to interact with it. Most of the commonly used appliances at home fulfill this role easily. All kitchen appliances for example, microwaves and electric cookers are very easy and comfortable to use while sparing the user the nuances of the technology behind it. Devices such as smartphones, televisions and even vehicles are all able to afford this confidence to the users with ease.
Pioneer but little penetration
Since the invention of blockchain technology, there is a lot that has been done with the technology. What is interesting however, is we are still grasping this new technology and there are a lot of possibilities that lie yet to be discovered. Not bad, considering the infrastructure is still under construction. Currently, blockchain technology has been the reserve of developers and programmers, who are courageous to invest in this new technology. There are limited schools which offer these learning opportunities to a wide audience nowadays. To be able to utilize real world adoption of blockchain, the most robust platforms for use is ‘Ethereum’ with over 70% of the top 100 cryptocurrencies currently in use having been launched there. Ethereum has the first mover advantage in this space because it introduces the smart contracts which enable application of blockchain technology beyond finance and into other fields. Understandably, Ethereum has some primal limitations that make it less suitable going forward. Frequent criticisms against Ethereum include scalability, smart contract bugs, and even the difficulty in learning Solidity. To ensure all hands are on deck, we should be able to onboard as many people as people, developers and not. And the platform should be able to handle as many transactions as possible without downtime. There is no limit to the innovation that can be initiated when we have millions of users contributing to the ecosystem.
No code smart contracts
Not everyone is a coder. Or likes to code. But everyone can be able to contribute to the innovation in this space. One of the barriers to entry of blockchain technology is the learning curve that users have to go through before they are able to code smart contracts. What if it is possible for us to be able to code smart contracts easily without the hassle of learning a programing language?
What blockchain currently needs is a beautiful interface to wrap all the technology behind it to enable the average Joe to easily use it for day-to-day activities. Smart contracts do not have to fulfill enterprise-level functions. If they can be used to make our day-to-day lives better, then indeed blockchain technology will have trickled to everyday usage in society.
To be in the top 10 of the most used Ethereum dapps today, an app need only have 100 users per day. The highest number logged was during the Cryptokitties fame, when more than 14, 000 users jammed the Ethereum network. and we all know how that went. Now what would happen if everyone is able to use the network, we are now talking about millions of users. Something along the lines of the load that a popular payment processor such as Visa or Mastercard can process. This means we need to have a very fast network that can be able to handle all these transactions with ease.
