Is Bitcoin useless? Not at all.

“Bitcoin is useless.”

That’s the response UK MP Ed Miliband reportedly gave when someone suggested using Bitcoin mining to monetize the UK’s wasted renewable energy.

Useless?

Let’s take a step back.

Luxembourg, and Europe as a whole, is facing the same questions as the UK:
How do we balance energy security, sustainability, and financial inclusion in a rapidly shifting world?

Because here’s the truth:

  • Bitcoin mining can stabilize renewable grids without requiring expensive upgrades.
  • It can monetize wasted energy and speed up the ROI of new renewable installations.
  • It can turn stranded electricity into a tool to fight energy poverty.
  • It has helped deliver electricity to entire African villages, funded conservation efforts, and offered financial freedom to people in oppressive regimes.
  • And yes, it has become one of the most sustainably powered industries on Earth, more so than traditional finance.

So… is that useless?

In Luxembourg, our energy is often curtailed, our innovation boxed in by outdated narratives, and our companies hesitant to explore Bitcoin due to political ambiguity.

Meanwhile, countries like the US, El Salvador, and Bhutan are stacking Bitcoin as a strategic reserve asset, turning it into a pillar of national resilience.

Should we finally tap into Bitcoin's potential as a store of value, a decentralized infrastructure tool, and a weapon against energy waste?

We think it's time to ask better questions.

Don't know where to start?
OffChain Luxembourg can help. With education. We're here to support, not push.

Let’s not dismiss what we haven’t taken the time to understand.

Let’s do better. Together.
