Well if they keep making fees like this then the conversion will occur. People will not outcry so much as just stop using it when they find an alternative to use.
The big problem I see with XRP is it is centralized. It is not decentralized. This means it can be controlled by the man in the middle. They may not be doing it yet, as that would be stupid but they could.
For general use... STEEM or perhaps EOS as they are even faster than XRP as far as I know. EOS will be able to handle the smart contract stuff if that is what people want.
Though if anonymity becomes and issue then Monero may be the one I'd use for that. I've only recently really looked at it.
For pure speed though I'd go with steem.
What makes Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ripple, etc nice is they have a fixed maximum supply. So as long as the coins continue to have a use they should go up in value as usage of them increases.
Steem has a constant infusion so it should technically never go to insane values, but it could be more valuable in the long run just we'd be holding larger quantities of it.

They would love to kill Bitcoin. They can't. That is due to the decentralization.
So is XRP a crypto currency? Yes. DO I think it will make money? Yes. That's why I bought some.
Yet it also could easily be an avenue of control. I mean the banks. They are not good people. They've been manipulating and screwing us over pretty good since before 1913, but after 1913 they went totally nuts.
Decentralization and taking it out of their hands is returning that control to the people.
XRP is kind of the opposite of that. I think it will do good, but I ultimately do not see it replacing bitcoin as it is centralized and putting the power back into the hands of the banks.
Once they have enough of that power they are known for price fixing, and manipulation.
That'll take some time. For now I see XRP as a decent investment. Yet like I said I'm not really a crypto trader. I am mostly a steemit/steem user who decided not to keep all my eggs in the steem basket.
Though my eggs were built 100% with working on steemit. :)
