Does Your Mom own Bitcoin?

I was very glad to see this article today on CoinDesk by Taylor Monahan, founder of MyEtherWallet which highlights some of the challenges to cryptocurrency adoption.

Although I first got involved in cryptocurrency's more than two years ago, it was not until April 2017 that I first used MyEtherWallet in order to participate in the VERI ICO. Its a great platform and deserves much credit but I still needed "teens with Youtube channels" to make sure I was doing everything correctly. As we all know, they're are no do-overs once a blockchain transaction is confirmed. Immutability is certainly a feature to those of us that love the tech but it's a stumbling block to others in a world where the "online experiences we've grown accustomed to include insurance, mobile banking, 'undo' buttons, password resets & live customer support."

Yes, my parents own bitcoin and ether and litecoin. Talking them through the Coinbase process has been difficult enough. I don't see them moving funds off the exchange and making real world transactions anytime soon. Or maybe I just dread the thought as I know it would be an opportunity to test my patience.

So where does that put us on the S curve of adoption? Will blockchain technology and or providers adapt to a society that generally is unaccepting of the personal responsibility that comes with holding on to private keys or will the advantages of blockchain shift the collective mind?

My mom is intelligent and adventurous but she didn't use a computer from an MS-DOS prompt, She's never dialed up to a BBS and she certainly isn't going to pay for dinner with a 40 character string. But, next time I see her I'd be glad to pick up the check...or QR code.

How about your Mom?
