I must say that was a great answer! I have learnt something today (as one should every day) I was brought up around shot guns and they are basically what most people I know have in their gun cabinet. There is the occasional .22 rifles around but not too many, these guns are used exclusively for hunting. My understanding is that they can't really be used for home defence because the law states that guns must be kept in a locked cabinet which is bolted to the floor or wall and these are inspected by the police. I suppose if you had time you could get them out but if you wake in the night with an intruder downstairs then you might be out of luck. You must of course have a gun licence in the first place and submit all serial numbers etc. Luckily for us the criminals are far less likely to have guns because of the seriousness of that as a crime and because of the lack of proliferation. Gun crime is on the rise though up 27% in the UK in the last year but "gun crime" does not require a shot to be fired just possessing without a licence is a serious crime but still....
I would fear that if we had more guns then most stop lights and road junctions could turn into the OK coral with the amount of aggression that gets shown!!
I also carry a Leatherman knife very regularly and mostly forget that its even on my belt until I have use for it, I honestly couldn't imagine carrying a 9mm around with me but thats just a cultural difference.
The world needs more explanation about the differences between rifles as you explained it above and maybe some people would benefit from having it explained that gun control could mean gun cabinets and licensing so that its more difficult for mentally ill people to get their hands on them.
Everybody everywhere needs to remember that the majority of us have more in common with each other than we have differences.

Dammit should be 2 R's in corral
You could have just edited it. lol.
In America it varies by state about lock boxes for guns and home defense. Where I live in PA there is a law now as the "Castle doctrine" for home defense, and the "Stand Your Ground" Law. The Castle doctrine allows you to shoot and kill anyone who breaks into your house, the idea being these people broke into your house and they may want to kill you, rape your wife and children and put your baby in the microwave, so better to shoot them dead. Now the "Stand Your Ground" Law basically say if someone is attacking you, you have the right to stand your ground, you do not have to try to get away first. While in other states you are not allowed to shoot someone who breaks into your house, you have to run from them. Now Statistically in the states without the Castle Doctrine and SYG Laws home invasions happen much more frequently, Imagine this happened in your house http://news3lv.com/archive/report-victim-assaulted-4-times-in-home-invasion-attack. If this home was protected with a shotgun it could have been prevented. These guys that rapped this woman also could have STDs and this woman will be mentally messed up for life and also infected with a disease. It could easily end a marriage or cause her to commit suicide from the grief. Now when you were saying that in traffic it might turn into a shootout, it doen't. People know that the others would have guns too and no one wants to risk death or imprisonment over an argument.
America has been armed since its inception and only recently these things are happening. Now in each of these cases we have mentally ill people pulling the triggers and in most of these cases it was brought to the attention of the police and the government and they failed to prevent it. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.
Now a political question. What if tomorrow the Prime Minister decided that there was going to be a 9pm curfew in effect indefinitely, a 30% tax is going to be added to your paychecks and alcohol is now illegal and all Bitcoin must by taxed at 90%. What would you do? How would you all stop the government from their Tyranny? This is hypothetical but this is why the US constitution is so adamant about the second amendment. When the US was formed they were sovereign states much like the countries of Europe but they agreed to pool resources for certain things like a military but that they needed a document to govern the terms of their teaming up so to speak. In creating these documents they wrote in these safe guards to try to prevent anyone in power from making themselves a dictator. However with the amount of corruption in the system it is not what it was meant to be. I still do not understand how it is okay for Pharisaical companies or Banks to donate money to Political Campinas to "Lobby" and how this is not called Bribery.
But at the end of the day, Europe is a great nation, America is a great nation, Great Britten is a great nation many nations are great. Lovely landscapes and different things to do and enjoy. Different laws, I mean some people like prostitution and in some countries thats okay. Some people like gun and in some places that's okay. Some places let you run with the Bulls and other let you take drugs. I love that we have different places to go and try new things. Now there are also scare things in some places too. Prison is Mexico is horribly, in Singapore they Cain people and in Iran they cut peoples hands off. The big problem is when you visit these places you might not know the law and might not speak the launguage.
Oh and the American education system is broken, it is now a propaganda machine controlled by the left political party, all unions are like this.
