What form are your STEEM holdings in? If it's SP, it will take 2 years (they break it up into 104 parts). If it's STEEM or SBD, you can move them out now and exchange if you want.
Having SP gains you interest rate, which may be a factor in deciding whether or not to power up. The downside is the long payout rate.
