This was scary, very scary actually as I don't like heights! I walked along the blade of a wind turbine then made a BASE jump after the blade started to move. 😨
As BASE jumpers, we are always looking to find new experiences. This night was an 'almost' perfect evening for it. There was very little wind, and I was very current, meaning I had been actively making a lot of BASE jumps at the time, particularly from wind turbines.
This evening felt right for me to try a blade walk. I had been thinking about doing it for a little while, but this night felt like the one. There was a lot of dew on the blade, so it was slippery, but the blade does have an ever so slight sandpaper like feel to the top of it. If you looks closely at the photo you might be able to make out the slightly darker part on the top side of the blade. Either side of this surface was pure gloss, and I had to make sure I didn't push off this when I made the jump, otherwise its a guaranteed slip.
My intentions were to walk as far as I felt comfortable, then make the jump, however, the further I got, the further I thought I could make it to the very end. But when I heard my buddy say it was starting to move, I panicked and just wanted to get off it, so I turned and jumped.
I think if I ever did it again I could make it to the end, but personally, I have taken the risk now, and I am not current anymore, so will quit while I am ahead and leave it there, as a good memory.
