do you have a screenshot of that? because I haven't witness that behavior on STEEMIT, not to mention the STEEM blockchain doesn't support short positions (as far as I know, at least). However, I have witnessed all the offers (or bids) disappear rather quickly, especially if a key support or resistance level is broken.
So, if you over bid the offer and get a high fill, for example, it may be due to someone else beating you to the punch (or the order was canceled), and someone else hit your new bid at the higher price you posted. The result will appear as wide spread behavior over a large price range, as shown below. But that's a liquidity issue, and a very different situation than what I was describing here.
