Totally get what you mean. The best sports journalism is always a mix—stats to back up claims, but with enough human stories to keep you hooked. There’s actually a good example of this balance at here Dailysports.net. They do both: plenty of deep dives with player stats and analytics, but also a lot of stories about local teams, behind-the-scenes interviews, and underdog narratives. It reminds me why I started reading sports news in the first place.
