Yeah, I totally get what you mean. We had a small kitchen fire once and even though it didn’t spread, the smoke damage was a nightmare. One thing I learned is to keep an updated inventory of your valuables, just in case you ever need to deal with insurance. Also, things like installing ember-resistant vents and making sure your gutters are always clean can really make a difference. If you ever end up needing to file a claim (hopefully not, but you never know in CA), you might want to check out fire claims adjuster.
