We need multiple rankings...
To solve the fake news we need multiple ranking methods. I think this would even help for steemit. See it is not just "Is this true?" There are other aspects. Does it represent both sides fairly? Is it well researched? Is it well written? Is it courteous and polite? Is it plagiarized? What is the reputation of the person who wrote it? What is the history of past articles? Is it new? Urgent? Important? Valuable? Socially, with "likes," "Shares," and "comments" we get a lot of that information. Comments on an article are actually really good, both as a writer and as a reader. All that said, "social approval" is only one part of truth. Many times -like before the subprime financial crisis- many people are fooled. In implementing this on Steemit, I think there could be a ranking button where we could rank on multiple characteristics.
