I saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi like everyone else did. Which may be a lie, I was actually taking notes during most of the movie. The notes were regarding the technology, and how the Star Wars universe would run off decentralized technology. Decentralized technologies which are mainly possible because the inception of bitcoin and blockchain.
Of course, another tie in to the decentralized technology is that the whole Star Wars saga is based around politics. Government trying to consolidate, while the people decentralize each time.
Centralized = empire. Decentralized = rebels. Sort of like the saga of Bitcoin, other crypto-assets, and their decentralized technologies. The root is political.
In this article series, I will be focusing on the decentralized technology aspect of crypto-assets. I could easily start a series on the similarities between the politics of Star Wars and the politics of crypto-assets. Both represent the struggle for autonomy via decentralization.
The decentralized technologies that spawned from bitcoin and distributed ledger technology include blockchain, swarm intelligence, smart contracts, DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations), DAGs (directed acyclic graphs).
An interesting tidbit is when I saw Rogue One in 2016, I didn't have a tech background. Yet, shortly after began full time studies of crypto-assets and decentralized technologies. So, when I saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I felt I was watching Star Wars from a new technological perspective.
This is when I came up with the idea for this Steemit article series, Star Wars and Decentralized Technology.
There are some questions I would like to answer.
- If Star Wars universe was assumed to be fully centralized, how many servers (single points of failure) would they need to protect at all times? Which would be how many floating data warehouses, or stationary ones? They would need way more guards than are shown in the movie, imo.
To first figure out the server space, the technologies need to be inventoried by watching the series and movies.
- Then for the sake of figuring out how decentralized their universe is, we would need to take the inventoried technology and rank if centralized technology can cover its functions at a high level without many issues. Then that allows for us to get a percentage of how much of the technology can be centralized without issues. The rest we can attribute to requiring decentralized technologies.
Regarding that, there's always an explosion happening. This means they constantly need the resources to rebuild. It seems like that would also tie into mapping out the major economies of Star Wars, cryptocurrencies. (Another large task!)
I'm sure if they're travelling at lightspeed they have blockchain, DAGs (directed acyclic graphs), IoT, M2M (machine to machine) economy, AI (artificial intelligence), AR (augmented reality), VR (virtual reality), and all that mastered.
I believe that the Star Wars universe would have to be decentralized because the galaxy encounters all kinds of conditions. The tech needs to be smart enough to re-calibrate itself accordingly to the atmospheres that it's traveling through - at light speed! I could be wrong, but that kind of resiliency does not seem best served by centralized technologies.
Even if I can't answer these questions right away, I plan to work on this series as time permits. If anyone would like to contribute to this project, contact me!
Let me know if I've made some mistakes about the technology. In addition, I will be focusing on producing shorter articles while working on this, to earn money.

A lot of people say that people will rise up against corruption but with a decentralized currency like blockchain tech it very well might be the government rising up against the blockchain... who knows.
I like the analogy and if you think about it it could be spot on. I wonder if it will be the governments of centralization waging war on those that wish to split off into the unknown with decentralization. I definitely think this could be a future truth.
A very intriguing article. I am currently wondering how many parts of the economy could be decentralized and autonomous. The major problem I see is around issue resolution. Who resolves unpredicted problems with autonomous organisations - Predictable problems could be handled by smart contracts, but what happens when something unforeseen occurs. Do DAO's need some distributed decision making authority?
This is an amazing idea and I cannot wait to read more. I think you are right. Using Star Wars as an analogy is a great way for visual minded people to wrap their mind around these concepts! I hope it helps more people understand how great Steemit is, for example :)
wow interesting observation I will have to watch the movie and observe the block chain crypto-maven! thank you
With love,

Great article very creative, and shows how useful the tech is, been busy but finally got to read it, keep up the good work :)
Decentralization also comes with its own sets of problem just like centralization. Decentralization at the government level means chaos. For financial things it is ok. Just look at the volatility of bitcoin.
yes, the discovery period for this technology is going to be very volatile.
@originalworks
excellent post&good information well technology
Can blockchain and/or decentralized tech build me a lightsaber? This is a serious question. All I have ever wanted since I was 5 years old is a real damn lightsaber! I would be willing to drop some serious coin (bitcoin etc...) if someone developed a working prototype.
I applaud your fresh look at the Star Wars Universe. Interesting idea for a series of articles. I will be monitoring your progress.
(I hated The Last Jedi) Rot in Hell Disney.
I don't think decentralized systems are always better than the centralized ones, sometimes having a leader or a reference point is a good thing. Though I love how decentralizing systems are solving the big mess our current world has became.
And
when/if those systems become out of control in the future... A great centralized system will come to save the day... hopefully.EDIT: Whoops, my comment had nothing to do with Star Wars but that's what I've thought when I read (parts of) your post.
This is an interesting idea to speculate on. I guess I need to break down and see the latest movie; I hear it goes into the tech a lot more than the others did.
