Ecommerce is often used to refer to the sale of physical products online, but it can also describe any kind of commercial transaction that is facilitated through the internet.

E-commerce has evolved to make products easier to discover and purchase through online retailers and marketplaces. Independent freelancers, small businesses, and large corporations have all benefited from ecommerce, which enables them to sell their goods and services at a scale that was not possible with traditional offline retail.

The online sector is still not very mature. Technology is always changing and the new online businesses that are popping up are trying to meet the new needs being created.

Primarily, the 4 types of the ecommerce models include Business to Consumer (B2C), Business to Business (B2B), Consumer to Consume (C2C) and Consumer to Business (C2B). The potentials of the e-commerce world cannot be over-emphasized. Global retail ecommerce sales are projected to reach $27 trillion by 2020.

E- commerce has broken the time and distance barriers encountered in physical buying and selling. Buyers can place orders anytime anyday for products, irrespective of their location or time zone; and goods get delivered in good shape.

An integral aspect of the e-commerce process is developing and nurturing relationships while executing sales. Today, this has become seamlessly possible with the assistance of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest. These platforms support relevant content sharing, direct communication and interaction with prospects and social listening.

Many industries are now adopting the e-commerce strategy primarily in business to business selling or consumer purchases in offering financial advisory services, realty and automotive. Many atimes, e-commerce is mistaken for social marketing.

E-commerce also lays emphasis on sales and marketing professionals which are the concern of social marketing. E-commerce also has a goal of establishing and cultivating one on one relationships while targeting it's messages at a broad audience.

Most businesses interested in maximising profits and increasing returns on investment utilize the e-commerce mechanism through social media to get their business popular, drive traffic and be able to have direct interaction with potential clients and customers. It helps companies develop connections, gather insights and build relationships to speed up sales processes that will eventually lead to high yields.

The E-commerce world with a focus on the social selling industry alone has experienced major growth and expansion since its inception. It is now an industry worth $180 billion growing at 10% rate annually. Influencers, loyalists and entrepreneurs who are ardent believers of a brand take up marketing roles in the social selling model. The whole social selling process generates equity for brands who utilize it and also redistribute profits to product users. It is unfortunate that only a few giant companies benefit from the model.
