I would say. The chess game is watched by a crowd of thousands of people who also are keeping the score.

If the chess pieces some how got moved, or fall off, and the three people can't agree on the last state of the chess game. They can use the last state, which the majority of the crowd agrees on.

I like your analogy with using a chess game!
