[Social Network] Sapien

Now, let's talk about the fourth new blockchain-based social network that I've got for you, this time it's Sapien. Sapien is a democratized social platform that uses its own ERC-20 token called SPN to reward content creators without involving a centralised authority, as well as including a focus on privacy and developing a Proof of Value mechanism. In the white paper they describe it as such:

Sapien is a democratized, tokenized, reputation-based social news platform capable of rewarding millions of digital content creators without any centralized intermediaries. Sapien will be powered by our utility token, SPN, and built to provide a smooth user experience that will bring the benefits of the Blockchain to the masses.

As with all the new social networks discussed over the past few days, this one is still in beta and currently lacks many of the features the team behind Sapien hope to bring to the table. These will include both public and private browsing, encrypted chat, marketplace and a strong development platform to build apps within the Sapien ecosystem.

There are plans to allow advertisers to use the platform too, but ensuring that users are in control of their data while also enabling them to "be able to reap the rewards for the consensual disclosure of information when third-party apps ask for permissions." I'm curious to see exactly how this will be implemented, and whether there is the option to completely opt-out of any form of targeted advertising.

Another one of their more admirable goals is to try and tackle the growing problem of misinformation, or "fake news" as many prefer. This is a cause I feel strongly about, and I perceive it as a massive hurdle that Steemit needs to get over before it can be taken seriously by the masses. Free Speech is important, but Free Speech doesn't mean free from consequences. But I digress.

This platform definitely has potential, but then so do all of the new platforms that I've been looking at. It really comes down to their ability to steadily grow the number of creators and consumers in their ecosystem. Personally, I think the network that will come out of this the strongest is the one that can draw in and keep content creators, curators and consumers.

I've heard rumours of YouTube literally paying their biggest creators six or seven figure sums just to stay on the platform, and that's because YouTube wouldn't be the king of the video platforms without it's devoted content creators. To see one of these new networks do something to try and draw in a few of these big name quality creators would be a sign to me at least that that's the one to watch.

What do you think about this new rival platform? I would normally include a link to join the waiting list, however it hasn't been working for a few days now, which maybe isn't the best omen. Anyway, let me know your thoughts and feelings down in the comments section, I always really enjoy reading your perspectives on these things. As always, make sure to follow me for the latest Technology, Internet and Pop Culture updates, plus whatever else I feel like writing about.
