What is the best way to explain the blockchain to friends?

in #blockchain8 years ago (edited)

For many veterans of steemit, it may seem weird to be writing about the blockchain while actually writing on the blockchain.

But we live in interesting times and many people have no idea what I am talking about, almost 100% of the time.

To be honest, they had little idea of most of the things I talked about before. But now, it is an order of magnitude greater.

Most have just got there heads around the fact that computers exist and that you can actually communicate with people from all over the world for free.

There are still people in the world who have never used a computer...billions in fact.

The fact that a lot of them live in the UK is a bit of a surprise, but there you go.

Another group of my friends are long time bloggers and they know exactly what they are doing online but many have little knowledge of the crypto revolution that is going on around them.
There is a link to a video below. Don't miss it.

Lifting the lid on the blockchain

I have been telling everyone I know to turn up their hearing aides and listen carefully while I try to explain what a distributed ledger is.
I can see their eyes glazing over as they drift away to memories of happier times.

I call people before the blockchain (BBC's) and people after the blockchain (ATB's) to gauge my approach to the initial conversation with these various sub groups.

BBC's. I explain how great computers are.
ATB's. I ask them what they know about crypto currencies.
Both great conversation starters I think you'll agree. :)

The long drop into the blockchain

It's usually at this point I run off and make a video explaining the whole thing but during my research for this very idea I came across a brilliantly simple explanation by Anders Brownworth source on his YouTube channel of the whole blockchain concept and thought? This is great content let me share it on steemit.

I checked steemit first and found that another steemit chap had already found the exact same source.
Not being able to resteem it and not wanting to duplicate it.

I have instead placed this link to the video content on @claudiop63 blog

If you ever had any doubts about how the blockchain works. This will clear up everything for you in a nice easy to digest way.

Hope this helps? And if it does welcome to a whole new world.

The photos are from a video shoot I did at Denny Abbey in Cambridgeshire. Brilliant day out and full of history.

Your explanation was so funny and sadly, so true. People better "get with the program!" For the longest time, I couldn't get over how a fax machine worked and thought it was a fabulous thing...can you believe that? HaHa! I know a few people who don't have a computer and no desire to get one. I would be lost without mine! At least we are "with it" as old timers. Great post as always. :)

Don't laugh but I've still got a fax machine in the cupboard and believe it or not I was still using it 7 years ago when I leaved in South Africa. It was the only way to deal with many organisations there. Banks lawyers etc.
It's hard to understand how many people still have no clue about tech you and I take for granted?
We are the silver surfers lol

Too late...I am laughing about your fax machine. And laughed even harder when you said, "We are the silver surfers." I Love that! :) :) :)

Molometer, you outdid yourself again. I love how you see the world and how you write. I did look up your source and watched Anders Brownworth explain the block chain. I appreciate how you take the time to research things to help others. I always look forward to your posts. Thank-you!...Cabbagepatch :D

Anders made a very clear and understandable video on the block chain.
I refuse to reinvent the wheel when a great example already exists.
Tell me @cabbagepatch did you 'get it' first time? lol

Are you testing me??? :D lol

I wouldn't dream of doing something so pointless.
This is for people who have no information about the whole block-chain concept. ;)

@melinda010100 and I discussed the outhouses of our childhoods. And the fact that many still exit to this day even in London.
Thanks for making the connection with the blockchain and the bogchain. @old-guy-photos
The silver surfers, grey nomads or oldtimers catch on fast once they know how much money they can avoid paying the banks.
They remember a time before everyone had bank accounts and people paid in cash on the barrel head.
They are the fastest growing group adopting cryptocurrencies. They've seen the sense of it...eventually lol

Did you try it out?

I downloaded the entire blockchain of Litecoin. I'm going to do a bit of mining.
It took 4 hours on my crap BT broadband connection. It's fascinating and pretty simple to do. The computer does all the work. I just have to set it up and run it.
