Not long ago, maybe some hours ago, i read an article on the Conservation International Blog, Humanature, about massive deaths of starfish and the reason for their deaths is linked to the rising temperatures of the oceans.
According to this new study, 20 starfish species are dying due to a wasting disease. Because the oceans are getting warmer, corals are susceptible to diseases.
Surely the deaths of these starfish species can cause a change in aquatic ecosystems.
To give a clear view how these deaths have an impact on aquatic ecosystems i would like to give an explanation.
Starfishes are known to be marine predators. They eat urchins who eat kelp. Kelp forests are forests that provides nursery habitat and protective vegetation for different fish species. A huge amount of kelp, meaning a lot more kelp forests means that we have a higher biodiversity. Not to forget to mention, kelp forests also store large amounts of carbon. This means that it's source of regulating our climate.
Yes, climate change can cause all these awful things. And for us, we have to make sure to bring a change in all this, or else we will come across more natural disasters and losing of flora and fauna.
It sounds very scary and it is.
We shouldn't come to a point where climate change can't be reversed.
So, we have to act NOW.
