My first Friday Night "Shill and Chill" Hangout with the folks from @helpie (#helpie in Discord)

in #blog6 years ago (edited)

So Friday night was my first "Shill and Chill" Hangout with the folks from #helpie

Before I get in to the post I just want to say thanks to everyone in that channel for all the help and support they have given in the week or so I have been on Steem. You guys have been awesome

Now on to the hangout. The idea behind Friday's Shill portion of the event is to raise awareness of other people's posts. Like most other discord channels there is of course a post promotion channel where people can flag their own posts and hopefully get users to go, read, comment and of course upvote. But how many people are really going through every post in their channels promotion section?

#Helpie takes this to a new level with the Shill event. The idea is quite simple but also quite brilliant. Each member who wants to participate in the event must choose another @helpie members posts and present it to the group. No promoting your own post. This gets the participants more involved in what the other members of the community have posted in the last week. I found myself scouring most of the users listed in the channel and checking out their posts, looking for that perfect one that I could "sell" the rest of the group on. It had to have the right tone, the right flair, look good and all of that jazz. It was definitely more than I do when I scroll through the promotion sections of the channels. I must have read 30-40 different peoples posts looking for the "right" one.

Who did I want to promote? This is essentially like re-steeming someone's posts and being a small fish and a newbie I wanted to give it sufficient consideration - no Cat Meme's no matter how cute or inspirational.

Finally I settled on a post from a user named @bozz.
Oh Boid! Mining with Bozz

This seemed like a worthwhile cause. Help cure cancer, earn some crypto and help out a fellow helpinaut while doing it. Yep count me in. I signed up, made sure I understood the basics of how things worked/looked and shilled away.

I must have done pretty good as I was able to convince a couple folks to sign up on the spot. Thanks @meno and @zyx066 for that. Hopefully others will follow.

If anyone is interested in joining BOID you can find my referral link at the bottom of the post.

Clayboyn's Curation Corner 9/13/18 was another post "shilled" (still can't get use to calling it that lol) by our own @zyx066

Next up was Coffee's of the World - Sumatra Mandheling roasted by me @c0ff33a as presented by @cryptoandcoffee

This turned into an interesting side chat, you really want to see the replay of the event (see link below) to find out how this turned into a what rare coffee is made from animal poop conversation. Yep its for real folks and the answer lies within (pun intended).

Next up we had Team of Two Contest - Engage and Create Together !. Another very worthy post.

Boy this was turning out to be a tough competition.

Things got cranked up another notch when @sunravelme presented not one but two articles for consideration.

When the Towers Fell. An extremely well written and heart warming/wrenching 13 year olds recollection of where she was during 9/11
and
Fear of(original poetry) - Yet another poem by a very talented artist (@staceyjean)

We also had DAD-Chronicals : Staying in the world of the big ones - where do children gain trust? as shilled by @eaglespirit

And the final article to mention (although not the last presented) was actually one a few people had wanted to present/shill. It was written by a dearly beloved community member and based on the tone and fark imagery presented had a lot of people worried. They immediately went to the post to offer heartfelt wishs and assurances that while we may all feel alone and in the dark at times, none of us truly ever are.

Take a read of: Death and thoughts of leaving. written by @paintingangels and presented by: @torico, @meno, @staceyjean and mentioned by a few others. This just goes to show what true community is.

Well that was it for all the presentations and shilled posts for this week

The judges decided to retire to their secret, oops sorry TOP secret room to deliberate and decide who should be awarded the prizes for the week.

Oh did I not mention the prizes yet!!!!!

Yep in addition to having some good old fun, getting to know some of the members of the community better and having a friendly competition of who can shill a post better than the others, the @helpie community also gives out prizes for this weekly event.

YET ANOTHER REASON TO JOIN. LIKE YOU NEEDED ANOTHER.

Prizes are 1 week delegations of differing amounts of SP, ranging anywhere from 100 SP up to an amazing 500 SP!!!!!

That's pretty good for shilling someone else's post right? Warm fuzzy feeling AND Steem Power!!!!!

Before I get to this week's winners I'd like to thank the sponsors and donators of the Steem Power.
In no particular order: @eonwarped, @meno, @soundwavesphoton, @coff33a and @amymya. Forgive me if I missed anyone, you weren't on my list.

And now for the winners:

@sunravelme - 500 SP. Well done
@cryptoandcoffee - 300 SP - Lot of coffee lovers among the judges LOL
@zyx066 - 250 SP
@ancientknowled3 - 200 SP - WOAH That's me folks. I won something my first time participating
@eaglespirit - 100 SP

Great job to all the shillers and thanks to all our sponsors/delegators and judges.

Well that's it for my experience at the #helpie channel Friday Night Shill and Chill Event. Hope you enjoyed reading and laughing at this post as much as I did participating in the event. Maybe I will see some of you next week, ready to shill and chill. Hope to see you there.

If you'd like to watch the replay you can find it here: Friday Night Hangout

As mentioned earlier, if you'd like to sign up for BOID, help in cancer research and earn yourself some crypto you can sign up with my link here:

And now it all makes sense! That's awesomely kind of @cryptoandcoffee to share my post - and you had a discussion about Kopi Lowak too - amazing.

I really should pitch into one of these, but my Fridays are pretty jam packed so it's pretty hard to fit it in - sounds great fun though.

Looking forward to more of the same in the future

@ancientknowled3 nice meeting you too and hope all is well.

Thanks for including Team of Two contest in this article :D

Congrats to all winners <3 <3 <3

Awesome people, all * ___ *

It was my first week shilling too and I loved it! What a fun concept- getting to see other peoples posts and being encouraged to interact with them was great. I know that's something I struggle to find time to do on a regular basis, so merging it with a voice chat really helped.

I'm so honored to have won! There might be a victory dance going on right now- I didn't even know there were prizes until I saw your post. Thank you to the judges ❤️ I shall use it well!

Well congratulations on winning 500 SP
And dance away

I did a jig when I saw I won 200, so lets see what you do with 500 SP
LOL

Nice one ancient. Good recap and look forward to the next one.
