Snakes have an important meaning in the symbolism of alchemy and was seen as an animal of wisdom and occultism and it often appears in old writings or works of art of alchemy and in the philosophy of alchemy, a snake appears that once made everything alive and had also the ability to destroy everything and this occult view was associated with transformation. This snake is also known as ouroboros and is represented as a snake that bites itself into the tail and thus it also symbolises the cycle as mentioned above from fertility and destruction and in addition it can also be considered as a metaphor for the four elements and symbolically it is also linked to various work steps. It is also linked to the transformation of the substance which is transformed into a better state and fittingly it embodies the principle of heating, distillation, condensation and cooling of a liquid and ouroboros is also considered a symbol of eternal life and the scholars also considered it a symbol of different cycles. Alchemy and mythology are often closely linked and the alchemists used mythological scenes as a metaphor for their work and so often the staff of the god Hermes which is enveloped by two snakes was often depicted and this staff was also known under the name Caduceus and as a typical sign of the heralds it was also called herald staff in ancient times. In alchemy, it is one of the most important symbols and was also considered a powerful sign that should embody the two in principle of the female or male aspects and it was also linked to cosmic energy and was also associated with parts of the human body such as the spine and the brain.

This form of cosmic energy can also be found in tantric teachings and linked with the Kundalini, which is considered the primal force of humans and from the point of view it is also a sign of the eternal fire that slumbers in one. The snake is probably considered the most mysterious animal in alchemy and, according to interpretations, was considered an animal of perfection that experiences different stages of transformation and thus achieves wisdom and enlightenment and from an occult point of view, the snake was also linked to the light bringer Lucifer and once surpassed the divine. It was also typical to consider the snake as a symbol of duality, which represents different opposites and most alchemical representations in which snakes can be seen can be found in the Middle Ages as well as the 15th and 16th century and as a symbol, it has also helped shape some teachings such as spagyrics and has developed into an important symbol in today's medicine. In alchemy, mythical creatures often appear consisting of snakes and other beings and often snakes and dragons were brought into a context and also in alchemical color teachings, this animal appears again and again in an occult context and there are different views about the exact meaning and as a symbol of creation, it was also associated with the aspects of fertility which manifests more and more into wisdom. Aspects of metals were also associated with snakes and according to mystical views it is the poison of the snake that was once supposed to become the strongest medicine and the snake turns away from its own fear and desire and rises as an enlightened soul.
