Here you can see pictures of the geranium which is also known under the scientific name Pelargonium and the origin is in the southern part of Africa where it has been appreciated for a long time and one of the first Europeans who had discovered the plant and went more into the research was the doctor and botanist Paul Hermann (1646 - 1695). He had the order for the East India Company to travel to Sri Lanka to collect plants there which he should bring to the Netherlands and he had the task of focusing especially on medicinal plants with which he should heal the employees there and on the way the crew made a stopover in South Africa where he saw some new plants and documented them. He took some samples of the plant which were sent to the Netherlands for further investigations and first the people thought that they would already know it and only some time later it was actually found out, that it must be a new plant and it did not take long until it was cultivated more and more in the Netherlands and quickly reached other European countries as well as other continents. In the next few centuries, numerous crosses emerged and it established more and more as an ornamental plant and at the beginning it was particularly known by the nobility and decorated numerous gardens until it had also found more and more general distribution and Switzerland was so enthusiastic about the geranium that it became a national flower there and merged with the culture. One of first who cultivated the geranium in Switzerland was the doctor Johann von Muralt (1645 - 1733) who was a passionate collector of flowers in his spare time and had dealt with different species and it should not take long for it to spread in Switzerland and today it decorates numerous areas and it is one of the countries where most specimens grow. The geranium also has a long tradition as a medicinal plant and is used in various areas and it is believed that it was already used by ancient cultures in Africa and due to the spread in Europe it became more and more recognized as a medicinal plant. As always, I would like to mention that in case of illness, you should always ask your trusted doctor about the correct use and possible side effects to avoid complications!
