If God urges us to be spiritually awake, and when God's Word speaks of this, it has little to do with a clock; He wants us to be awake in our hearts.
Why does He urge us to do this? Because in life we generally live on autopilot with all that this entails: work, problems, worries, and many other things. In this way, we neglect and fail to attend to what should matter most to us: our relationship with God.
When God's Word speaks of being watchful, it means that we should stay focused, that we shouldn't get distracted, that we shouldn't become complacent, and that we shouldn't lose our spiritual sensitivity. This doesn't mean that we should live in fear or anything like that; it urges us to live with intention, with an active faith, and with a heart aligned with God's purposes.
No one knows the day or hour when an unexpected event or change will occur in our lives, but those of us who are awake can be prepared for that moment, while those who are asleep may let any opportunity pass them by. Being watchful is a decision we can make at any moment, not just when we have time. God wants us to order our lives, to let go of what distracts us, and to strengthen our faith through the Word of God and a close relationship with Him. Let us live awake with clear minds and unwavering faith.
Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.

Si Dios nos insta a estar despiertos espiritualmente y cuando la palabra de Dios habla esto poco tiene que ver con un reloj, desea que estemos despierto de corazón.
¿Por qué nos insta a esto? Es que en la vida generalmente vivimos en piloto automático con todo lo que esto implica: el trabajo, los problemas, las preocupaciones y muchas otras cosas más. De esta manera dejamos de lado y no atendemos aquello que más debería interesarnos que es nuestra relación con Dios.
Cuándo la palabra de Dios habla de velar, quiere decir que nos mantengamos enfocados, que no nos distraigamos, que no nos acomodemos y que tampoco perdamos la sensibilidad espiritual. Esto no significa que debemos vivir con miedo o algo similar, nos insta a que vivamos con intención, con una fe activa y con un corazón alineado a los propósitos de Dios.
Nadie sabe el día y la hora cuando llegue algún imprevisto o algún cambio en nuestras vidas pero aquellos que estamos despiertos podremos estar preparados para ese momento mientras que los que duermen pueden dejar pasar cualquier oportunidad, velar es una decisión que podemos tomar en cada momento y no cuando tengamos tiempo. Dios desea que ordenemos nuestras vidas, que dejemos de lado aquello que nos distrae y que fortalezcamos nuestra fe a través de la palabra de Dios y una relación cercana con Dios. Vivamos despierto con la mente clara y una fe inquebrantable.
Velad, pues, porque no sabéis a qué hora ha de venir vuestro Señor.
