Steemit photography community

I really like how the photography contests are doing, the amount of participants are growing at a rapid pace and the quality of photos I get to judge is amazing. Still I am constantly looking for ways to improve, what I want is to build a community around photography here on Steemit. Where we can share our views and experiences of the places we life in around the world by using photography as a language.

Since there is only so much I can do myself I want to encourage engagement between each other and to do this I want to introduce the community favourite photo. An additional benefit is that it reduces subjectivity of these contests, I am only human, and conveys the shared opinions of all participants into the final selection

Community favourite

For every photo contest I will pick one photo based on likes, comments and views. To prevent abuse of the system I will also look at the ratios. Let me explain this in more detail, look at the following examples:

Screenshot 2017-10-13 03.42.05.png

Screenshot 2017-10-13 03.42.24.png

Screenshot 2017-10-13 03.42.31.png

If I would only look at total upvotes the first one would be the winner, for comments it would be tie between the first and second. So lets dig deeper.

Screenshot 2017-10-13 03.46.10.png

Screenshot 2017-10-13 03.46.16.png

Screenshot 2017-10-13 03.46.30.png

The first photo has 73 upvotes with 70 views and 11 comments, this gives an upvote ratio of 1.04 per view and a comment ratio of 0.16 per view.

The second photo has 47 upvotes with 37 views and 11 comments, this gives an upvote ratio of 1.27 per view and a comment ratio of 0.30 per view.

The third photo has 47 upvotes with 19 views and 3 comments, this gives an upvote ratio of 2.47 per view and a comment ratio of 0.16 per view.

I am purposely not looking at the $ value of each photo to make everybody's vote equal. To start things of I am going to rate a better upvote per view higher than comment per view, the optimal ratio would be 1.0 since this would indicate low to no bot votes(not that bots are bad). So in this case the first photo would be the community favourite. Depending on how well this goes I might also implement the most discussed photo, excluding spam.

How does this help me?

By upvoting and commenting on photos from other participants you are increasing the chance that they will also upvote and comment on your photos. This works even better when you are genuine in your response. So by engaging with each other we can enjoy these contests together, have fun together and learn from each other.

Keep sharing this amazing world we life in with your cameras and have fun doing so!

I agree you! Good idea for all...

@juliank There are a lot of up vote bots which can give you a lot of up vote. What would be better that you can pick top 3 and the community decide which one is the winner. In this way everyone will have the fair chance of winning.

Really cool idea, will most like implement this

Cool. Will see how it goes, I am in.

I really like this idea too. It seems the fairest way for everybody to have a chance no matter what rep or amount of followers they have. :)

Well I do look at all the submissions so everybody has a fair chance, it is just that my opinion is subjective and I would like to somehow gather the shared opinion of the community :)

Ah yes, I understand. :)

You're taking some pretty impressive steps to make this whole thing very fair. I totally support that, yet regret that I have one mere minnow upvote to give.

Every upvote counts, thank you for your support :)

I am very happy to hear this news, I really like the world of photography, where something we see and it can not we write in a story, then the photo will talk. I am still very amateur in the world of photography, but I will continue to learn and try to do the best I can.

I really hope that later this steemit photography community is formed, and I am one of those who participated in the community. Best regards @saini88

The community is already here, but ye we can make it grow even bigger. It will be a fun ride for sure :)

Great! initative, fair and will get the people more involved, love it how the comminty grows.

Nice that you like it, that is my main objective

I like very much the idea of photography community, and it will reduce your subjectivity.
I see only 1 weekness - participants with a small number of followers

Yes very true, I did not think about this

I am a freelance photographer, I will like to contest so will be submitting my first street photo today. What tag should I use please. I upvoted and followed you.

You should use '#streetphotography' as a tag!

Excellent @juliank! I will have to take part in the challenges, sounds like fun! :)

Looking forward to your photos :D

very interesting idea but very hard work to check all these numbers..
and another metric - an amount of followers of the specific member that can bump the number of views, the Payout sum and finally wrong counted result

Interesting idea, I will think about it. In the end I am looking to automate it, so it should not be to hard to check

so yoire going to write some kimd of algoritm that all social networks are using ? not easy but maybe im wrong ;-) good luck

Well, I was thinking to learn how to extract all the posts from the Steem blockchain for a certain contest with the related metadata. It should then be possible to do some statistical analytics on it and maybe even some machine learning

sounds great ;-) good luck

I like this idea very much and I applaud your initiative to bring people to interact. However, the big whales will always eat the minnows, Lol.. It is a very very good start though!!!

I will not be looking at the $ upvote value, this should take away the influence of the whales

Excellent idea, in what I can collaborate with me, greetings. @juliank . Personally I would use more the criterion of number of views and comments, since the vote can be modified by automatic voting bots, which I know there is no bot that only looks at the works, also my experience is that I only open and read those images that really grab my attention since you can vote without opening the post.

I like you criteria, It will be great if @juliank will take this into consideration.

Thank you very much for the appreciation, regards @ryankofi

I agree, another member suggested to select 3 photos and let all of you decide in the post. I think this is a great way

I think that is a better option, I have thought and in my case that I have people following my collections of photography in G + would greatly fatten the views even if they are still visualizations, maybe this option is better than proposed. @juliank

Good to take into account, I think it will mostly be a lot of testing and see what works :)

I completely agree, try different options and find the one that works best. @juliank

Great idea!
I was wondering... could I be of any help? For example resteeming the Community favourite once he/she is announced?

That is a very nice suggestion, however I do not want to make the community favourite more special than the other winners.

hm, let's see...
This means you are not interested in my proposal but are telling me that in a very polite way... fair enough :-)
Or it means that I have to resteem a max of 10 participants a day... I think I can handle that, besides the fact I already resteem some of the participants already...

Hehe, that is very kind of you. I think to make each resteem more valuable you want to limit the quantity somehow.

I like the concept of a community selection winner in some capacity. I do worry about the metrics shown here because it appears to be exploitable.

All the same, great contests and look forward to more excellent pictures.

I agree the metrics are susceptible to exploitation, that is why testing and adjusting for there is probably the best way forward

i think this post should be best..because this content write about to use best topics...

Brilliant idea @juliank ! more power to you!

wonderful post and narrative. Thank you for sharing!

Great idea! Lets build a real community!!

Good initiative! more power!

it's good, i need steemit photography community. Thanks @juliank

good idea. good luck brother

This post received a 5.17% upvote from @randowhale thanks to @juliank! To learn more, check out @randowhale 101 - Everything You Need to Know!

I just look at the catch, since there are many friends who vote among them, I lately choose the best of the ones you put and I tipped it seems more appropriate than looking at the votes and the comments

I agree there will be some challenges but I also have some other ideas

I'm all for it :)

I can see the need to try to narrow the field of view a bit, but I think it might push out entries by users with less of a following.

Still, let's try it and see what happens.
