Ain't this a blip?

Saw a rant today about Puerto Ricans need to go back to their country...Let's look at that just a little bit.

Chris Columbus was in and around those islands in the early 1490s. Spaniards were settling the southern U.S. to California along with huge swaths of Mexico from then on.

Puerto Rico was granted citizenship in 1917 after it was 'won' from the Spaniards by the U.S. in 1898. As a commonwealth, Puerto Rico is part of the United States and it's people, citizens. They can move freely in and out of the mainland because they are citizens. They do not need passports because they are citizens.

As a NuyoRican, I am blessed to have been raised on the mainland with much of the culture of the island. I do wonder, sometimes, if the racism I've experienced is jealousy of culture (along with jealousy of the great genetic material of the Taino, African and Spaniard peoples) by those with little cultural roots at all.
