The Decentralized Myth - Beyond the Hype

in #blog3 years ago (edited)

In the video, Tech Pow Wow: The Decentralization Myth, we exclusively look at the technical promises being made in some decentralized communities. As a note, this video is only discussing the technical aspects of what are being promised and is mentioning nothing that is financial. In this video, I refute many assertions being made by individuals in these communities, such as "you'll be able to host anything because the providers are completely decentralized" or "our project will allow for any free expression." Make no mistake that technical disciplines won't be able to solve these problems - if you want to view them that way - anymore than existing communities will.

Some questions that are answered in the video:

  • What do I point out quickly about the "financial" view and why the appearance of success doesn't mean anything? Keep this in the back of your mind any time you see anything become popular.
  • Why is the promise that "there will be no censorship" not going to be honored in the long run?
  • What clear pattern from the past 30 years that was promised, but failed tell us about what will happen with these "decentralized" projects?
  • How does decentralization fail with security and linkability? Based on history, why are these far more important?
  • How can we apply "there's no honor among thieves" in the case of decentralized promises that may actually be engaging in illegal behavior or allowing illegal behavior?
As a quick example of people complaining about censorship, I highlight a friend complaining about this without pointing out that his behavior was illegal. That's not censorship, that's blocking criminal behavior. You don't have the right to do whatever you want. In many cases, companies are stopping illegal behavior. I have yet to see censorship outside of illegal behavior, even though this accusation is thrown around everywhere. Some may point out that the definition of illegal can change and this is certainly the case, but there's a huge difference between behavior that is debatable and outright unethical - for instance, stealing a person's property is unethical, while pointing out that an "authority" is overstepping boundaries on an unbased assertion is not.

Vladimir Lenin was probably one of the most clever strategists of all time. In addition to toppling the Russian Empire and replacing it with the Soviet Union, he helped massacre millions of lives. Ironically, the promise of the Soviet Union was a "perfect" society; a Utopia. It achieved the polar opposite. It became one of the worst tyrannies in history. Anyone who believes any of the Utopian promises in these decentralized communities would be wise to consider history - the more Utopian the promise, the more deadly they'll become in the long run (run, don't walk toward the exit).

Appearance of success is not success. This partially explains why "a fool and his money are soon parted." In addition, what appears to be a solution may not be a solution. Lenin also understood this. He was the father of "controlled opposition" - movements that appeared to oppose the Soviet Union, yet were really organizations that fed who the opposition were to the Soviet leaders. In the long run, many people who thought that they were fighting the Soviet Union found themselves in the Gulag or being executed outright. The painful lesson in history being that any opposition can be faked. Never underestimate people's inherent tendency to be exploited and used by those in power because most people are not strategic in their actions.
