Unresolved: Cryptids - Phantom Kangaroo

in #blog3 years ago

The Phantom Kangaroo is a marsupial that has been reported in many places outside of Australia and New Guinea. It's said to look like a basic kangaroo however, some reports state that the animal they saw is much bigger than the average kangaroo.

Sightings go back as far as 1899. During a tornado in Richmond Wisconsin, a woman witnessed a kangaroo leaping through her backyard.

There was a report of a giant kangaroo in 1934 in Hamburg, Tennessee which apparently killed and ate police dogs.

In the late 50's, a man saw a kangaroo near his cabin in Nebraska chasing dogs.

In 1974, two police officers saw a kangaroo in an alley. They attempted to capture it but the kangaroo escaped by kicking one of the officers as he tried to handcuff it.

In Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1978, two men took a blurry photo of a kangaroo.
I unfortunately couldn't find this photo. If any of you have seen it, send it over! I definitely want to see it!

In 2013, a kangaroo was reported in a field in Oklahoma by hunters. They were able to catch it on video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?fbclid=IwAR3BNJ-aBB6DtDc2ABKvW7vJgGvexuQitdpr1UxaDutukHLONKFiEuoNwBI&v=CriuV-yNqv4&feature=youtu.be

It's suspected that the 2013 kangaroo was a pet kangaroo that went missing over a year earlier.

It's very possible that most, if not all of these sightings are kangaroos or wallabies that escaped zoos or are an escaped pet, like the Oklahoma kangaroo possibly is. However, some of the descriptions people gave of the creature they saw represent an extinct type of kangaroo known as the Procoptodon. These animals were short-faced herbivores which lived in groups. This wouldn't explain the animals people saw eating the dogs unless they were rabid or trying to defend itself. If not, people believe it could be a surviving Ekaltadeta, a predatory fanged kangaroo from Australia that lived over 10 million years ago.

Again, it's very possible and most likely possible that the animals people are reporting are escapees. Kangaroos and wallabies living outside of Australia and New Guinea is not unheard of. The Isle of Man is a great example of that. Back in the 70's, a pair of wallabies escaped from a wildlife park and now the island is home to hundreds of them.
