If you think about animals, if you've ever seen an animal that is afraid of someone, and I'll say people because especially young kids, when they see a little cute animal or they consider it to be cute and they want to try to catch it, try to chase it. And the animal will instinctively run. It's going to try to run first.
SourceIt wants to avoid the confrontation because it is afraid of what could happen. But when that animal gets hemmed up into a corner, that's when you see it brace and prepare itself for the fight. And it decides to fight itself or fight its way out of that corner because it feels threatened.
And that's what we will tend to do, which is one of the reasons that we may retaliate or attack people when we feel as though they've said something we don't like or even something we don't understand. And that's why as competent and effective communicators, it's extremely important that we take our time to understand. And that's part of the definition of strategic responses is getting context and considering the outcomes and potential long term impact of the responses that you give.
But something else that's a potential reason that you may choose to attack or retaliate is past experiences where you have been hurt before and you've seen someone else hurt and you've made a decision that I will never let anyone make me feel that way or let someone treat me that way. So there's a decision that has been made in our mind that we're going to fight. We're going to retaliate and we're going to make sure that people know not to mess with me.
Then there's also a desire for validation from the people who are watching. When people are watching, it's amazing how especially young men when they're competing and they know that the girls are watching, how things get more intense than they typically may get because they want that validation. Things can escalate very quickly.
And whether it's for the girls or not, we have to understand that there is a desire for validation when people are watching that we may not even consciously be aware of that we're trying to get. But that could be a reason that we do some of the things we do.
We want people to know that how strong you are or how intelligent you are so you you respond with an attack or retaliation to prove to everyone watching how strong and mighty you are.
