How to Mine Gridcoin for Free using LiquidSky

in #boinc7 years ago (edited)

You may have heard of using Microsoft Azure or amazon's AWS, however those are only limited free trials. Using LiquidSky, you watch ads to get computing time, and it doesn't have a time limit.

Step One: Setting up your account

If you are on a computer:

  1. Open up your browser and go to LiquidSky
  2. Now click the download button, once it has completed downloading run it
  3. When you see the menu click the signup button
  4. Enter your account information and you have now created an account

If you are on android:

  1. Go to the Google Play Store and download the LiquidSky app
  2. Run the LiquidSky app
  3. Hit the next/finish button until you see the Sign Up and Sign In
  4. Click on Signup, enter in the details required, once done, scroll down and hit continue
  5. Now you have created an account

Step Two: Earning SkyCredits

One SkyCredit = 1 minute of computing time*

Now that you have an account setup, it can take anywhere from 2-3 weeks for you to be able to mine Gridcoin. You can earn SkyCredit in the meantime. You can watch ads or take surveys to earn SkyCredits.

How to earn SkyCredit on a computer:

  1. Make sure you are logged in
  2. Now scroll down until you see "Earn Free SkyCredits Now"

How to earn SkyCredit on android

  1. Make sure you are logged in
  2. Click the image in the upper right corner that has a plus sign on it

*In gamer mode you use 1 credit per minute, but in pro mode (it has more CPU cores and graphic cards) it uses 2 per minute

Step Three: Setting up your SkyComputer

Once your 2-3 week waiting time has passed, login to LiquidSky either on computer or android.

  1. Now you will see a menu that says Steam, Origin, etc. Click on chrome.
  2. You will get the option of gamer or pro, pro has more cpu cores but it uses more SkyCredit so choose accordingly
  3. Now type in the following URL: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php.
  4. Click on the download button and run the exe file.
  5. Now you can either customize boinc or use the default settings

If you are pool mining click on view->advance then click tools->use account manager now enter your pool's URL. If you are solo mining add your projects and use your boinc email and mine on team gridcoin

When you leave LiquidSky's interface while boinc is running make sure you hit Leave Anyway instead of shutdown

NOTICE: as of 11/4/2017 LiquidSky has stopped users from only watching ads to earn SkyCredits. Click here for more information. The only way to earn them for free is to have a promo code for an event or contest.

Thanks for letting us know of it!
How easy is it to earn 1440 SkyCredits (=1 day of computation time); how much time would I have to invest in watching ads / solving captchas etc.? How much SkyCredit did you earn over these 2-3 weeks?

Well there are a couple ways to earn SkyCredit, ads, surveys and promos. If you only watched ads it would take 144 minutes (assuming they didn't run out of ads). Each ad gives you five SkyCredit and is 30 seconds long. Each survey i think is anywhere from 30-100 SkyCredits (I didn't use this, so i may be wrong). I got only one promo code for 100 SkyCredits during the time waiting. In the 2-3 week waiting time i forgot about it so I only earned 200-ish SkyCredits.

Ok, thanks! So I guess it's indeed only intended for playing games for some hours and not crunching 24/7. To me it seems tedious to collect enough credits to run it even for one day. But if someone has spare time, why not :-)

I couldnt get signed up, its still inbeta, may be worth watching for when it works
