Looks like a tamarind tree, but maybe I am mistaken. I tried growing these from seed once, but I think the seed pods I purchased were probably old and dried out, so nothing sprouted. They do grow in wild areas on their own, and have a slightly invasive habit. They have wonderful leaves that move like gentle fans in the wind.
I know what you mean about the tamarind leaves. I have one of those as well.
I had rotten luck with all my seeds (except for the one) as well and read that some people steep them for a few seconds in boiling water. But all I did for the lucky one was nick the seed coat a little and that worked like a charm
