This was a solid 4-star for me, I haven’t read a classic mystery like this one in so long that it felt nice. I think I just had some issue with the pacing of the book otherwise it was quite enjoyable. Whitlam was sort of predictable with the way he was placed in the plot but what intrigued me most was his motive, for I couldn’t for the life of me think of any legit reasoning for anyone in the field of education to commit murder. I really liked the flashbacks sort of intel that we got on the characters, it was interesting, and the book really felt like a movie being played in my mind. Also, I was so glad it doesn’t end up with FalkxGretchen cuz first off, I didn’t like her and then it just felt unnecessary, like a mystery novel doesn’t need to have a romance arc. It was all so ridiculous yet I believe it’s realistic too in some sense, the mob mentality, and the craziness of the town (if I were Falk, I may have let the town burn down ) like seriously, with the car doused in shit scene, I was steaming with rage .
I found Falk admirable then, like he kept himself in check and didn’t go in a rampage right then .
