Packaging And Branding As Ways To Increase Sales

in #business3 years ago (edited)

There is a very humorous pidgin proverb in the place I grew up that says that:

Eye wey look go first chop before mouth go chop

This means that the eyes will be satisfied with a product first before the person will consume it. This is where packaging comes into play. Another humorous proverb here says that:

The difference between "six" and "half a dozen" is in the packaging.

You see, packaging goes a very long way to define the acceptance and acceptability of a product in the sight of a customer or a potential customer.

You will agree with me that there are products you have bought before, not necessarily because you need the product but because the branding or the packaging captured your attention. Yes, I for one have experienced this in a number of occasions. I remember a time I went to buy a certain consumable and when I entered the shop, I saw a similar product to the one I needed but in another packaging which was far better, I quickly grabbed it. Of course, this can also be blamed on my curiosity.

When you understand that the human mind is generally built for curiosity, you will know how to use it for the advantage of your business. Your product may not be the best in the market but you can raise it up to par by just having the right packaging. Most times, customers' satisfaction begins by just looking at the product and when the packaging is catchy, then you have given them a part satisfaction.

The truth is, you may have a very wonderful product but a wrong packaging can make a mess of it. Obviously, customers will need to buy it first before they can see how good the product is right? So what you should be interested in is ways to make the product catch the eyes of the customers first. It is patronage first before consumption. There is little or no way you can convince a potential customer that a product is great if the packaging does not catch their attention. As a matter of fact, in some cases it is the container that gives value to the content.

There is a particular snack we enjoy eating here and it is called "kpekere". In the real sense, this is just unriped plantain chips but because it is tied with waterproof bag, then it is called "kpekere". However, when it is packaged and sealed, it will be called "plantain chips". Same content but different names because of how they are packaged. This is just to tell you that good packaging should not be a luxury if your business must grow, it should be a necessity.

The reason many companies spend so much money on packaging and repackaging their products is because of the needs of the customers (which is the king). Remember that all you do is to please your customers, so there is nothing wrong in taking feedbacks from your customers in ways to improve your products and services.

When you observe a stall in the growth of a particular product, first try to get one or two feedbacks from people and most times, it may just be an issue with branding and packaging. Always have in mind that what you need for your business to grow is to give the customers what they want.
