Kata ‘asoka’ merupakan kata yang diambil dari bahasa Sansekerta yang artinya terbebas dari sedih. Yang menarik adalah terdapat sejarah yang menyatakan bahwa ada raja yang bernama Ashoka.
Nama latin dari tumbuhan asoka adalah Sarca Indica, dimana bagi masyarakat Hindhu tanaman ini dianggap suci. Berdasarkan jenisnya, tumbuhan ini terbagi atas 2 macam, yaitu asoka tanpa ranting dan asoka biasa dengan ranting.
Di Indonesia, tanaman ini dapat ditemukan disekitar pekarangan rumah, hal ini dikarenakan tanaman ini dapat tumbuh dimana saja. Bagi sebagian masyarakat Indonesia, tanaman ini dipercaya dapat mengusir kesedihan yang dialami oleh seseorang.
