When it comes to art, unique pieces gives me a great deal of pleasure. New, different, unusual works can be produced by avant-garde artists, as well as traditional artists that are prone to forgetfulness. Like the cover picture, a modern interpretation of the traditional miniature art.
Miniature is a decorative craft used for painting, decorating roll manuscripts, scrolls, and books from the Roman period to the end of the Middle Ages. Later on, it was a traditional craft developed during the Ottoman period because of the belief that painting and surrogacy were forbidden in Islam.
The word miniature is derived from the Latin word "miniare", meaning “painting with red”.
Miniature is painted on paper, parchment, ivory and gilded. It is done without details such as light and shadow. It is one of the most important decorative arts of the Ottoman Empire, along with the fine writing(hat) and marbling art.
The most prominent feature of miniature art is the careful processing of the details in these paintings. Even the most remote figures are transferred to the paper in the most detail.
The miniatures don't use perspective. This is not about not knowing the perspective technique. Perspective is one of the effects of positivism emerged with the renaissance in art. Before the Renaissance, art was part of the divine. In the miniature, pictures are not supposed to be viewed from the eyes of mortal people, rather than from the eyes of God. For this reason, figures have similar sizes independently from the point of view. Only senior government officials are drawn larger to indicate their importance. Also, people who want to be marked are depicted as taller.
Miniature a craft rather than an art. Miniature artisans have very clear rules. Artisans who are interested in the subject draw miniatures as the supplementary element of the book texts, in the way they learn from their masters. Miniature is also used to document historical events. From these works, it is possible to learn the rituals, traditions, clothing styles of the period.
Topkapı Palace Museum in Istanbul has one of the world's best collections. The museum includes Mongol, Timurlu, Turkmen, Safavi, Ottoman period works.
Nobel Laureate writer Orhan Pamuk has mentioned miniature craftsmen who compete with each other in his novel 'My Name Is Red'. Orhan Pamuk, who drew pictures before he started to deal with literature, dealt with the miniatures quite extensively in this novel. The novel is also interesting in terms of narrative technique. In a part of the novel, events are explained through the eyes of a dog.
In miniature art, the picture drawn in a sketch is then transferred on paper. Strong substances such as root paint and gold were used in the polishing of the picture.
Miniature tradition is being continued by a few modern artists. Below is a work by Nusret Colpan, who died in 2008. I would also like to mention the name of Mahmoud Farshchian.

Minyatür Roma döneminden ortaçağın sonuna kadar olan zaman diliminde rulo elyazmalarını, parşömenleri ve kitapları resimlemek, bezemek için kullanılan süsleme zanaatı. Daha sonraları İslam'da resmin ve suretin yasak oluşu inancından dolayı resim sayılmadığı için Osmanlı döneminde gelişen bir geleneksel zanaat.
Minyatür kelimesin, Latince "kırmızı ile boyamak" anlamına gelen “miniare” kelimesinden türetilmiş bir sözcük.
Minyatür kağıt, parşomen, fildişi üzerine boya ve yaldızla yapılıyor. Minyatür ışık ve gölge gibi ayrıntılara yer verilmeden yapılıyor. Osmanlı imparatorluğunun güzel yazı(hat) ve ebru sanatıyla birlikte önemli süsleme sanatlarından biri.
Minyatür sanatının en belirgin özelliği, bu resimlerde detayların büyük özenle işlenmesi. En uzaktaki figürler bile en detaylı şekilde kağıda aktarılıyor.
Minyatürde perspektif kullanılmıyor. Bu durum perspektif tekniğini bilmemekle ilgili değil. Perspektif rönesans ile birlikte ortaya çıkan pozitivizmin sanattaki etkilerinden biri. Rönesanstan önce sanat ilahi olanın bir parçasıydı. Minyatürde resimlere ölümlü insanların gözünden değil, Tanrı'nın gözünden bakıldığı varsayılıyor. Bu nedenle figürler bakış açısından bağımsız olarak benzer büyüklüklere sahip. Sadece üst düzey devlet görevlileri, önemlerinin belirtilmesi için daha büyük çiziliyor. Ayrıca işaret edilmek istenen kişiler daha uzun boylu olarak resmediliyor.
Minyatür bir sanat olmaktan ziyade bir zanaat. Çok net çizgilerle belirlenmiş kuralları var. Konuyla ilgilenen zanaatkarlar kitap metinlerinin tamamlayıcı öğesi olan minyatürleri ustalarından öğrendikleri biçimiyle çiziyorlar. Minyatür tarihi olayları belgelemek için de kullanılıyor. Bu eserlerden dönemin törenlerini, gelenklerini, giyim tarzlarını öğrenmek mümkün.
Minyatürlü elyazmalari konusunda İstanbul'da bulunan Topkapi Sarayı Müzesi dünyanin onde gelen koleksiyonlarindan birine sahip. Müzede Moğol, Timurlu, Türkmen, Safavi, Osmanli dönemi eserleri yer alıyor.
Nobel ödüllü yazar Orhan Pamuk Benim Adım Kırmızı isimli romanında birbirleriyle rekabet halinde olan minyatür zanaatçilerini konu almıştı. Edebiyatla ilgilenmeye başlamadan önce resim de çizmiş olan Orhan Pamuk bu romanda minyatürü epeyce detaylı bir biçimde anlatmıştıt. Roman anlatım tekniği bakımından da ilginçtir. Romanın bir bölümünde olaylar bir köpeğin gözünden anlatılmaktadır.
Minyatür sanatında önce bir eskiz halinde çizilen resim ardından kağıt üzerine aktarılmaktadır. Resmin parlatılmasında ise altın, is mürekkebi ve kök boya gibi güçlü maddeler kullanılmıştır.
Minyatür geleneği az sayıda modern ressam tarafından sürdürülmeye çalışılıyor. 2008 yılında vefat eden Nusret Çolpan ve Mahmoud Farshchian bu sanatçılardan ikisi.
