I think steemit is certainly better with rewards system cause it replaces the ads which Facebook utilizes. But thr quality of posts on Steemit is around the same.
The thing is that Steemit is still a new social media and people will more likely stay with big media like Facebook, so getting Steemit to mainstream is an obstacle
