Why stay?

in #busy7 years ago

I am just on my way out the door to work in the real world and my Boss hates lateness and can be quite an ass at times, but I will take the risk. I am self-employed by the way.

Even though I like what I do, there are a whole range of things in my work I near despise. Yes, despise. I hate paperwork, chasing clients, billing, bills and of course a massive amount of tax, at least percentage wise. Running a one person company isn't the easiest but, there are some rewards.

Money for me isn't on of them as I can likely earn more monthly working for someone else but, would I have the chance to spend as much time with my daughter as I do when I work from home? Not likely. There are also other benefits to it as even though my working hours are long, I can self-direct in some way however, in others I am tied much tighter than if I was an employee as there is no going home at the end of the day.

What I wonder is that as I read posts and comments about people's experiences at Steem from all kinds of perspectives, many don't seem to enjoy their time here but, they stay. Why? If they don't get anything out of this place it seems silly to just hang around complaining unless, that is what they actually like to do.

I am not just talking about getting money either but, if one doesn't find the social aspect suitable, why stay, if one doesn't like the content they read, why stay, if one doesn't see a future here, why stay? It seems masochistic to endure a place one doesn't like by choice.

I am onboard with this place being far from perfect but I personally believe (as you can read from my content) that there is great deal of potential here to create something worthwhile. I oo find content I like and I do find people I enjoy engaging with so, why do so many struggle? Maybe I am blind to something and they have a clear vision of the future that rationalizes their actions.

Anyway, I am off to work (I still need to put on pants) but was wondering if you have thought about why you are here. Feel free to comment and I will get to them later.

For the same reason people stay in relationships they don't like. Often in life, you need an antagonist, something to bitch about...or maybe it's.just that you're used to it, to doing something you don't like and so choose to subject yourself again and again to that thing, despite not liking it. It's the status quo and most folks don't want to upset the status quo in their lives :)
And besides, with Steemit, there's always the remote dream of making some big cash. Sure, it doesn't work that way, but you never know when you get lucky.

Oh and put some pants on, young man! :D

Much easier to complain than to do something about it. Although complaining is also doing something, in the long run only complaining doesn't solve things until there's someone doing something more.

You're absolutely right about the status quo and the money facts.

I think for many here, the chance of making some money keeps them considering some have made decent amounts here before.

Status quo is interesting and I also think that some people get bitter when things don't go to their plans. I often find that what many people complain about, they do also.

I put pants on... eventually.

Well, everyone has their own comfort zone ;p

I, for one, really enjoy the interactions and relationships I've developed here and I have no problem finding quality content that captures my interest.

For me, the bonus will be when, not if, steem rises and the bugs and minir issues are resolved.

Many are similar but perhaps it depends on who you spend your time with. Spend your time with people who produce what you enjoy and engage, and you will find content you enjoy and are willing to engage with. Same goes for producing. Many produce what they want and expect engagement without considering their audience. It is a one-sided conversation and not many enjoy being a part of that.

Few things improve without judgements and subsequent complaints. One could even argue that those who don't complain don't care enough. You don't make a very good point here.

It was a question asking why stay where one doesn't enjoy mor need to stay, not a statement, so there is no direct point.

Complaints and judgements however are statements based on opinion that could lead to raising questions but in and of themselves, do not require solution directly.

When it comes to caring, that requires follow through of some kind to improve circumstances, doesn't it?

No, not for users of a social media site. It is very uncommon to expect users themselves to solve the problems they broach.

Might be a bit different in a decentralised community that allows users to directly reward each other to anonymous accounts though. Not many of those out there so uncommon is likely.

Why would it be different? Many users here who perceive problems with the various goings-on and complain do not necessarily know how to solve those problems, nor should that in any way be upon them on a social media platform that wants to attract more mainstream users from outside.

Also, the problem-solving when it comes to reward algorithms and anything on, or close to, the blockchain is far less decentralised than you seem to think, and operates increasingly without listening to even those users who can and do make improvement suggestions.

I guess people have to complain to the right people who can do something then.

Still none of this answers the initial question of why if someone doesn't like to be here (or anywhere) they don't have to be, why stay.

Because they like the general idea and don't want to vote with their feet but want to make things better? Or because they liked things better the way they were and want to put some effort into returning to a better version?
Some stay for lack of alternatives, but that reason won't last for much more than a year. Too many alternatives will pop up, and are already appearing.

@ocrdu:

One could even argue that those who don't complain don't care enough.

Oh, one could argue that, but first I would have to know the real meaning of the word complain. To me the word complain has a bit of a bad vibe. Complaining is different than giving (negative) feedback. Or being sarcastic. Or passive-aggressive.
"Could you pass the potatoes!"
"Why are there no potatoes this side of the table."
"As always the potatoes were in front of someone else, not me."
"Pass the freaking potatoes!"
"Excellent potatoes, next time could I get the potato bowl first because last time I got nothing."
Different tones.

So if complaining is more like nagging or bitching, then I would say that the ones who don't complain are wise and care enough so that they are not irritatingly whining about everything to everyone.

On the other hand if complaining is similar to giving negative feedback, then it may be that if someone never complains, that person doesn't care enough to make things great again.

Because it still pays me something.

Although I've found a platform that rewards me more and I've been focusing more on that one. Also, I'm holding on to some naive hope that maybe a new whale comes along and notices me and adds me on his autovote list.

So I'll post here and there.

I am pretty sure there are going to be quite a few different platforms that will be better suited for various content types. Good luck on the other.

Thanks! It's been forever since I've seen triple digits on Steemit. :)
I couldn't be happier. I've been all smiles for a week now.

Anyways. I agree that competition will probably arrive pretty soon. And it's going to be interesting to see how Steemit responds. Will it wake up some of the lazy "investors".

Or will Steemit's fate be the become the MySpace of the blockchain social media era. The one that made all the mistakes so that others can avoid them.

triple digits... they don't exist anymore... do they? ;) Happy for you mate.

I hope that the competition will be both external and internal (SMTs) and will perhaps ignite a flame under some asses. It is all a big load of uncertainty though which is okay for me at this point.

MySpace is actually surprisingly active, still.

Hi Taraz. Why am I here. Firstly I found it by chance so had no idea about the rewards. Genuinely very naive when it came to that side of things as I didn't think this sort of thing went on. I am here for the fun of it and has literally turned into a personal challenge. I do see it as a social platform and enjoy interacting with like minded people.
The more SP you have the better you have done and the more you are worth. That is not really about the self gain though but being able to help others at the same time is more rewarding than the rewards really. I hope that kind of makes sense as maybe that is why I am growing because I care.

I do see it as a social platform and enjoy interacting with like minded people.

I find it kind of strange when people talk about it not being social but, it depends on experience. Perhaps a lot are wallflowers waiting to be asked to dance.

I joined steemit May but I didn't really understand it so I was not active then a friend of mine put me through like three weeks ago and it's been a nice experience.
First it's opened my eyes to another whole of technology entirely because I didn't know anything about blockchain before but now I'm learning the basic, I have learnt alot from quality post also, I look forward to reading from people, though I love writing but on steemit I realize I need to level up and be more professional about my writing as I want people to gain something from my post. Steemit has open my eyes to the fact that you can't take glory for others work so don't be lazy and create your own content. This place is really a nice place to be and I hope to add value here and make impact.

Steemit has open my eyes to the fact that you can't take glory for others work so don't be lazy and create your own content.

Plus, creating something yourself is much more rewarding personally. At least for me.

Yeah, it is

The platform works, I think and it has caught my attention more than most others. Working for oneself takes discipline and commitment as does making it on steemit.

Working for oneself takes discipline and commitment as does making it on steemit.

People don't see it as requiring work because they are conditioned into posting nonsense on social media. I don't really consider this as social media, just new media. There are going to be all kinds of aspects to it and many types of businesses that are outside the realms of social media completely.

For some reason it seems to be so much easier to complain than to thank people for a job well done.

I have to add that as some may get their fun by complaining, my belief still is that most of us just don't think about the fact that how much we complain about negative things compared to writing / saying out loud about the positive things. Or giving feedback wrapped around positive things. --> This is good - this one could be better - and this is good.

And I have to agree with you about the fact that this is a social media site (your previous post) and as a major portion of the proof-of-brain thing here in Steemit was lost right about the time I came, this never could have been just pure quality content. Social media site and quality content just together feel a bit like an oxymoron. And the fact that one never can please everyone.

But I'm cool with the fact that this is a social media site with quality and not so quality content. That's one of the reasons I came here. And I wouldn't still be here if I didn't have fun here. That's something that I've decided long ago. If I find myself complaining about something more than being happy, it's better that I left.

Now I should stop bugging you and this post as you left to work and can't answer me right away. And I really should stop answering to my own comments. I'm sure that has ruined my reputation in someones eyes. But I had good intentions. :) And soon I'm of to work!

And I wouldn't still be here if I didn't have fun here. That's something that I've decided long ago. If I find myself complaining about something more than being happy, it's better that I left

I am on my phone so will pick this out.

This is why I question as I assume most people would do some kind of balance check and just leave. Here though there is the added complication of potential to earn which throws a spanner in the works a bit for many.

Yes. The money. More money and potential millions.

But as @honeydue said it

or maybe it's.just that you're used to it, to doing something you don't like and so choose to subject yourself again and again to that thing, despite not liking it. It's the status quo and most folks don't want to upset the status quo in their lives :)

The fear of unknown if one leaves. The agony of doing things again and working for it to find something that might be better, but might also be awful. Who knows.

Is it so that if there are no big problems in ones life, one must always find something to complain about? First world problems. Or is it the fact that if someone's really stressed out, they complain about everything? Sees, hears of thinks no positive things. Or it is it that out of all the posts here, sometimes almost all of it seems to be negative stuff or one just stumbles upon complains because of personal (sub)conscious choices? A click here, a click there.

Complaining, an inexhaustible natural resource. If one could just stuff it into batteries and cool the whole town next summer when the next heatwave comes.

Yep, that pretty much covers it in most cases. I think most of us complain without really even being completely aware of just how much we complain. First world problems are rife as are a narrow set of negative experience in general or, a perspective of what ranks as worthy of complaint. It isn't just here of course, it is everywhere in this world.

I hate chasing clients too. I feel that I'm either too eager towards them and they might hate me because I don't leave them alone, or I think something like: "I've told them once and now twice, if they like me, they know where to find me, I hate begging. " As repeating and reminding people in various ways is one of the basic rules of marketing, and I hate doing that. Crazy!

Lol. I have much the same views. I need a personal shiller.... I mean, seller.

I enjoy my time here at Steemit though I will admit it should take a new user anywhere from 1-3 weeks to truly find his/her footing and know what role to play (blogger, curator or both).

It took me about 200 days to know what's going on here or decide what role to play. But I'm not normal. Oh, I'm only 168 days old you say. Well, I rest my case then! :)

1-3 weeks? It took me a few months to even start realising I should begin to look :D

I'm here on steemit seeking for freedom. It's an imperfect place but I think it has a place for many kinds of people.

There are all kinds of people here if you look. Many are even good people, at least in someone's eyes.

I am investing in the possibility of a better future. I believe that creating quality content and making strong connections can bring fulfillment today and can be life changing in the future.

I think being creative has value in itself too. Who can say what the future actually holds?

Agree. Creating/being creative has given me an outlet to express myself, strengthen my mind, and provide help to other people. No denying that I have received many benefits from being apart of this community. And I hope that my contributions will be of value to others as well.

Thanks, I saw the resteem from @berniesanders.

@abh12345 should be on your list too.

Ok great thanks for the tip!
@berniesanders thanks for the resteem!

If more come to mind i will let you know

thanks! that would be awsome.

Oh! as regards to complaining, no doubt I must be a wallflower waiting to be asked to dance. };)

added you to the list! thanks!

It is kinda sad time doing something you don't enjoy simply for the sake of money. Even when it doesn't look enjoyable, at least we ought to make a decent attempt if we will be dedicating a significant time of our lives to it. That's my view on an environment that appears barelt tolerable but for the money.

Steemit on the other hand is a place I actually enjoy. The amount of time spent here for $0 warrants we get some form of pleasure out of it...else it is a waste

It is kinda sad time doing something you don't enjoy simply for the sake of money.

There is so much of it in the world that perhaps the programming carries everywhere.

I enjoyed reading your story and can relate. Since 2003 I have been self-employed as my own boss in music. Yes there is marketing, book work, phone calls. But it is all worth it in the end. I once worked for a company. For 8 years I was employed at a casino in food n beverage. I did not mind the work, but was harassed 5 of those 8 years. It was a high stress job. Why do folks stay in those jobs they do not like? Benefits maybe. Stability. like an old shoe. I am much happier today but miss certain things of the former job. Thanks for your story my friend.

It was a high stress job. Why do folks stay in those jobs they do not like? Benefits maybe.

It is all about incentives isn't it? So, people stay somewhere they dislike because the rewards in their view outweigh the negatives they may feel. Some are here for money, some may just have nowhere else to go. Who knows but, maybe more should question their own motives before those of others I guess.

Why am I here? because I want to do something more and show my point of view. Why should i limit myself?

You shouldn't limit yourself if you hoose not to, you are free to do as you please in the cage we are in :)
