STEEM: Whales Are Losing Their Power....The System Is Not Broken...Report through 2/28/19

in #busy5 years ago

I last reported the numbers in a post that covered through January 31, 2018.

https://busy.org/@taskmaster4450/steem-whales-are-losing-their-power-the-system-is-not-broken-report-through-1-31-19

Each month I monitor what is going on with new accounts and the amount of MVests in each category. I do this to determine what trends are taking place.

Now that we are at end of month, time to post the numbers again.

I want to thank @arcange for the work done each day compiling these numbers and making the charts.

We have 3 months worth of data for analysis purposes to see how the 90 trend might be.

The first chart is from August of 2017, the month I started on Steem. It is placed here to provide some contrast to see how things are changing over a longer period of time.

Here is the breakdown.

So what does this all tell us?

To start: The system is working as designed.

The Whales are losing power.

This month saw the end of the major power down of Steemit Inc. In spite of that, the Whales did see a significant drop in MVests.

The big shift this month was with the Orcas. Looking at the account charts, we see the reason for this.

01-31-2019

account2.png

02-28-2019

accounts.png

There was a jump of 17 accounts. The Whales dropped one meaning the rest were from smaller accounts moving up. Dolphins saw a new decrease of 5 accounts.

This is a positive sign that accounts are moving up showing there is organic growth either through the reward pool or people buying STEEM.

There are now 11,556 accounts who qualify as either Dolphin or Minnow. It was only a few months back when the total accounts above the approximate 500 SP (level to be a Minnow) was under 10K.

On December 31, 2018, the Whales and Orcas had 318,339 MVests (77.23% of the total); on January 31, 2019, 309865 MVests (76.61% of the total)...a decrease of .8%....On February 28, 2019, 305,720 MVests (76.42% of the total)...an decrease of .25%.

It is important to remember these numbers are owned SP. This is not delegated. Since @steemhunt came into being, a lot of SP was delegated so it is equivalent to a Whale yet does not register as such. This is vital since that SP is used to upvote content by the members who post on that application. Ergo, we have a Whale (equivalent) upvoting smaller accounts.

In conclusion, the numbers are changing over time. It might not be happening as fast as some like but it is taking place. Continual working of the system does yield dividends.

I'm curious about this month's numbers.

Is it possible to forecast when the amount of SP owned by whales and the amount of SP owned cumulatively by all the other accounts will break even? Could you make a prediction about when you would expect that to happen?

I vaguely remember a post by someone (@penguinpablo?) predicting that a time will come when redfish/plankton will collectively have more SP than minnows who will collectively have more SP than dolphins who will collectively have more SP than orcas who will collectively have more SP than whales.

Seems crazy now but...

Not crazy if you look at the pace of increase of Orcas as compared to Whales.

The Orcas are steadily gaining each month while the Whales, for the most part, are decreasing.

In a few years, what you describe could be the norm.

It is hard to predict. The fact that Steemit Inc stopped their massive power down delays the process some.

If I had to take a shot in the dark, I would say that we could see that come about at year end. A nice push in powering up with smaller accounts could help hasten that time when the Whales drop below 50%.

Might coincide with the #10kminnows idea from @steevc.

Absolutely love this month to month comparison you are doing. The system works.

Looking at the lower end of I'm not that positive. Over 90% of accounts are inactive and inactive accounts are the fastest growing group.

From January to February we lost Plankton, Minnows, Dolphins and gained inactive accounts. The churn is real.

Thank you so much for participating in the Partiko Delegation Plan Round 1! We really appreciate your support! As part of the delegation benefits, we just gave you a 3.00% upvote! Together, let’s change the world!
