Lessons in Decentralization - Re: Ned's Bridge

in #busy7 years ago

Welp, I just watched Ned and Andy on the Bridge

I learned some tough lessons

When a community pretends they are decentralized, but focuses on one development company to do

EVERYTHING.

Blockchain Development, Marketing, Business Direction, Content Management etc.

And If that company says.. Hey guys we've got this... Or at the very least sends mixed messages about it.

And one day, they say.. Hey we are broke and tired.

Everything we thought was coming, comes to a sudden halt.

It is our own fault and the very reason for decentralization.

I'm pretty new to crypto 2.5 years in. Watching Ned's talk made a lot of things real to me that have only been a concept before. At some point probably soon, I will laugh and consider this part of my education. Right now, I'm kind of pissed that I knew some of these things could come to haunt us, but I just pushed it aside and hoped it wouldn't.

Ouch.

I'm regrouping please don't offer platitudes in the comments.

@whatsup,
I still stay with faith on STEEMIT INC! Anyway, we should decentralized the ownership as well! Like you said, everything decentralized, but the control still centralized! Good point and yeah it should be decentralized as well!

Cheers~

"Right now, I'm kind of pissed that I knew some of these things could come to haunt us, but I just pushed it aside and hoped it wouldn't."

Which things?

It's pretty much impossible to decentralize the website hosting.

I think you are right on... this is supposed to be decentralized. I don't know what kind of chaos that will entail, but I think we all know Steemit hasn't delivered in the past year and was never run, at least to external impressions (which are supposed to mean everything) like a professional business. It's time to embrace everything STEEM and only treat Steemit as a branch of that, imho.

Yeah agreed. But even in that video he sent mixed messages about that.

And with them being such a large stakeholder it really is a problem.

Cryptos - manipulate up, manipulate down - If "we just sacked all the developers" doesn't do the trick, maybe "no SMT's" might do it - one way or another the price will be driven down further before Xmas, and I suspect this is all part of the plan!

I've been using other apps that are on Steem for months now. I still like steemit but that beta under the name was never reassuring. No blockchain should rely on one entity but many that are more successful than Steem at the moment do, so I'm not too concerned. This is a great time to sort out these problems, ready for the next big wave of interest in cryptocurrency.

A lot of those apps were and are counting on SMTs as a way to fund raise, create revenue and build their businesses around.

Yeah. Nothing has changed as far as the potential, but the slipping timelines are not ideal. Appics were ready the Steemfest before last.....

It does seem odd. I'm a bit flustered by it all.

There's more to the chain. As much bickering and crap that goes on here; we are far more United than other cryptos.

Well I consider it an ethical issue with our largest stakeholder to promise SMTs and to not deliver them. It was very obvious he has no plan. Now is not the time to take a break. Jeez, I am forgiving, I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt and have for some time. But that was a shit show and perhaps unforgivable to me.

He is was a random stakeholder or a large application developer, it wouldn't matter. But he controls a lof of stake and has the potential to control the witnesses as well.

If today didn't wake people up to centralization effects, I am not sure anything will. Which is good news as it will slow down the bleeding.

I have not been on the bridge, but seem people expect too much from them. SMT will become a mirage?

I will get back to this once I have come up with a good platitude.

There is no way in hell I will have the kind of cool headedness, everything is going to be better no matter what approach you've displayed for months.

There is patience and there is patience.

If prices are low but the people at the top still behaved responsibly, then we can have patience but when they act like they've got their heads screwed backwards not once or twice but more, then the alarms must be sound and fire must be stoked into their butts.

I'm kind of pissed that I knew some of these things could come to haunt us, but I just pushed it aside and hoped it wouldn't.

WTF "hoped?"!

In 2018?

Jesus.

I'm saying all those same things to myself. So, yeah, I hear you.

Damn. I thought we are all holding on as we await for SMTs soon. What are 'we' supposed to do now?

And when I say 'we', I mean those of us with no huge investments other than the precious time used to build a now seemingly stagnated community.

Might as well just keep posting. There are enough people invested it will probably drop a bit, but likely recover at some point.

Of course I can't prove it. but that is my guess.

I appreciate a lot of what you say because you seem to pay attention to every single detail and you are also good at breaking down those details to understandable bits for those of us who are trying to keep up with blockchain.

i was thinking it was decentralized but it was not from the core itself

hi @whatsup

Unfortunatelly to many people are depending on @Ned and his team. With all respect - he is not even remotely close to Steve Jobs or Mark. I think initiall success of Steemit and bull run in 2017 followed by current crash brought to much pressure on his shoulders.

I'm pretty new to crypto 2.5 years in

That actually make you almost a VET :)

ps.
thank you for resteeming my latest post. I really appreciate :)

yours
Piotr

I thought the same, steem is decentralized it can't go anywhere, witnesses will secure it but ouch

Yeah, I've long thought it was a really bad thing that so much of the development is reliant on Steemit.

We've seen it for a long time. It's quite obvious. Development on Steemit has been stagnant. SMT's have been promised for too long.

We need more developers, and not working for Steemit.

Yes, I took the same lessons from the livestream. We have to take a lot out of the hands of Steemit Inc (and they have to learn to 'let us' by how they communicate...) so they can focus on developing the Blockchain into something epic.

We're all learning here. Steemit Inc is learning, Ned is learning, we are learning, the Witnesses are learning... The time is now to dare to fail and to start up projects, nodes, mini-companies that take over some of the tasks Steemit Inc has been doing for too long.

Take your time regrouping.

What stood out to me the most was how he mentioned over and over again that his original goal was to introduce others to cryptocurrency. I think the onboarding and the learning curve is so steep that it almost does the opposite.

Is an upvote good enough to feel better?

I just need to reframe how I thought we were headed and to kick myself a bit. I will be fine after those things happen. :)

Can I kick you too? Just trying to help.

Haha, how long is your leg?

Vaut le voyage.

No platitudes...just stopping by to sit quietly and mull a cup of hot chai tea in silence with someone who's been a huge fighter for this platform.

It seems to be the season of pink slips...7 out of 10 jobs lost? That's as bad as GE and another company who cut jobs in the past 24 hours...can't think of it...General Motors 14K employees...smh...rme...

Well, kinda' like my first 'love' Print-n-Post...makin' peace that one day I might log in and get a 'webpage for sale' sign.

I guess there's a legal protection with the word BETA...I knew it was kept in place for a reason...Three years in 'test-mode' would keep most 'investors' at bay; not, to mention the CEO powering down...no matter the 'reason'.

Peace.

Why don't the layed-off developers simply post here and ask for delegations from the community as their compensation for continuing development on SMT's, ect? I'd delegate 75% of my meager power.

yep, it's kinda hard to watch. ned had an edgy tone the whole time like he begrudges us for expecting him to do it all. now that the cat is out of the bag, it's difficult to see how we all just relatively passed over it. the previous livestream says so much. it was completely pointless, spineless, had no data.... it was ungrounded. there are a lot of lessons to take out of this and we're all regrouping.

In hindsight, the experience from HF 20 shows Steemit’s mentality of pushing things out with litte thought and testing. This is coming back to haunt them as well so they will need to learn the hard way and will lose control of the ecosystem over time despite their stake. Community will figure this out and take the lead as they leverage the value of the talent and resources engaging here already.

lets hope steemit won't disappear ....

I don't think it is disappearing yet. but the community has received a loud clear message. SteemIt, Inc is only committing to blockchain development. And only the things they want to work on.

Other commitments they have made, are "on the table". So, ...

@whatsup many think that steemit was/ is decentralized.. lol no sadly never the case. Token holders, began to centralize after launch and by HF 14 lil ppl started flocking to whales, just as physics dictates. It's never been decentralized, never will be.

Hopefully in future a platform will come along. ✌

Wow. So the SMT's are just a charade.
