Natural Herbal Remedies: Kratom

We love Natural Remedies? What's not to Like? Well, when it comes to Kratom (like Marijuana) the industry is under fire. And we don't understand why.

Kratom, also known as Mitragyna Speciosa, Ketum, Thang, Krypton, Kakuam, Bark, Thom, Biak-Biak is a tropical Evergreen Tree.

The original name used in Thailand (Biak-Biak) is a member of the Rubiaceae family. Other members of the Rubiaceae family include coffee and gardenia.

Native to Southeast Asia. Mitragyna Speciosa is indigenous to Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Papua New Guinea, where it has been used in traditional medicines since at least the nineteenth century.

Kratom, as we know it, is a leafy tree that grows from 10-15 feet tall. Its leaves contain mitragynine and are chewed as a stimulant in Thailand and South-East Asia, primarily among the working class.

The leaves of Kratom are harvested and crushed for use in Tea, Chewed, Dried and Smoked, Put into Capsules, Tablets or Extract.

Kratom is a very unique plant. It is probably one of the most potent Legal herbal psychoactives (without being a psychedelic) and its effects can be compared to that of pain killers.

It is mildly stimulating with slight psychedelic properties. The plants contains numerous alkaloids with different effects.

Kratom species are grown and harvested with White, Green or Red leaves. Each plant, according to where it is grown has different effects.

Advocates say the herb Kratom offers relief from pain, depression, anxiety, appetite, fatigue, insomnia. Scientists say it may hold the key to treating chronic illnesses and may even be a tool to transition out of opiate addictions.

Kratom's magical properties affect the Brain and it's Neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are defined as a chemical "messenger" that carries, boosts and balances signals between nerve cells and other cells in the body. These chemical "messengers" affect a wide variety of both physical and psychological functions including heart rate, sleep, appetite, mood and fear triggers. Billions of neurotransmitter molecules work constantly to keep our brains functioning, managing everything from our breathing, heartbeat, learning and concentration levels.

Since every Human is different (especially minds) it is hard to say which strain works best on whom.

The various strains of Kratom are of extreme interest to the Research Community as they have amped up the study of these Alkoloids and their affect on Neurotransmitters in various Patients. Some of the most prominent alkaloids of interest include:

Mitragynine
Mitraphylline
7-hydroxymitragynine
Mitragynine Pseudoindoxyl

The concentrations vary between strains, seasons and localities making the "High" of the plant complex and highly variable. Due to this, US Government is unsure of where to classify it, as there has not been much study on the Topic. To make it more complicated, Pharmaceutical Companies would love to get their hands on the Drug patent. Currently, the FDA has not approved Kratom for internal use. As with Marijuana (ie: THC) , the Kratom industry gets a bad rap. The FDA is concerned that Kratom, which affects the same opioid brain receptors as morphine, appears to have properties that may expose users to the risk of addiction. Hmm. Aren't people addicted to Coffee and Alcohol as well? This boils down to Greed.

The Good news? it's still LEGAL in most states.

If you intend on giving Kratom a try. Here are our Best Tips.

  • Many vendors sell Kratom for quick Profits and do not always ensure that the Source of their product is of High Quality. To make things worse, many Suppliers do not test their products before bringing them to Market.
