Today I would like to show you a few probably somewhat surprising pictures of agaves (genus Agave) and cacti (family Cactaceae) covered by snow.
In our garden are growing some perennial species of these plants which are normally expected to be found in desertlike or Mediterranean areas.
Most of them we had bought quite some time ago in a special shop for hardy cacti.
By the way the perennial cacti can survive frosty temperatures by transpiring so much water that only a concentrated, sugary liquid remains which cannot freeze, thus their cells won't be damaged.

Heute möchte ich euch einige vielleicht etwas überraschende Bilder von mit Schnee bedeckten Agaven (genus Agave) und Kakteen (Familie Cactaceae) zeigen.
In unserem Garten wachsen einige winterharte Arten dieser Pflanzen, die anzutreffen man vermutlich eher in wüstenartigen oder mediterranen Gebieten erwarten würde.
Die meisten von ihnen hatten wir vor längerer Zeit in einem Spezialgeschäft für winterharte Kakteen gekauft.
Übrigens können winterharte Kakteen frostige Temperaturen überstehen, indem sie durch Verdunsten so viel Wasser abgeben, dass nur noch eine konzentrierte, stark zuckerhaltige Flüssigkeit übrig bleibt, die nicht gefrieren (und damit die Zellen schädigen) kann.

Halten diese Pflanzen auch richtig harte Wintertemperaturen von sagen wir mal -20Grad aus?
Ja! Wenn überhaupt haben sie eher Probleme mit zu viel Nässe als mit Kälte ...

Coole Idee "Wüsten"-Pflanzen wie Kakteen im Garten zu pflanzen. Unsere kleine Kakteen-Parade in der Küche macht sich auch ganz gut. Wenn irgendwann mal der Garten kommt, dann werde ich mich an deine Bilder erinnern😃 Schönen 2. Advent.

Sehr schöne Idee, die winterharten Kakteen. Ich wusste gar nicht, dass es das gibt. Damit kann man auf jeden Fall sein Fernweh nach südlicheren Gefilden etwas mildern :-)
Amazing plants! They are still green and look refreshed among the frosty snow…. I do really love snow, especially when they are on the leaves like these. The white of the snow and the green of the leaves look pretty good!

Schlecht wär, wenn der Pulverschee so hoch wär, dass du den Kaktus nicht mehr siehst und barfuss drüber läufst, Autsch :D

Wenn ich mich nicht irre, halten die Zellen von den Pflanzen Kakteen Kälte aus, wird es aber zu viel. gehen die Zellen glaube ich kaputt. Sehr selten das Bild mit dem Schnee , super :-)
Allgemein stimmt das wohl, aber diese Sorten sind eben speziell. :)
What kind of plants do fine when covered by snow
Sir @jaki01, because I have seen for this type of plant is usually live on the weather a little bit hot. In our area there is also a plant like this, maybe a little more beautiful in compare to that you've got Sir @jaki01. ;)
I mentioned the names of the plants in the titles - these are special hardy species ...

Diese schneebedeckten Agaven und Kakteen sind tatsächlich ein ungewohnter Anblick.
Es ist schon interessant, welche Strategien sich die Natur einfallen lässt, um Pflanzen an unterschiedliche Umweltbedingungen zu adaptieren. Vermutlich bietet die Schneedecke auch Schutz vor der Kälte.

Hehe I used to lived in colder climates but moving to warmer places takes it away from you! :D
Nice photos! You don't often see cacti and snow together and I like the scientific explanation as to why it doesn't freeze.
Wow cool was ihr nicht so alles im Garten habt :) sieht schon eher abenteuerlich aus wenn da Schnee auf Kakteen liegt!

Did you know that Agave is used to make tequila? If you want, you can make your own tequila and get drunk, ha ha ha.

I think it wouldn't work, as the real tequila is made from Agave tequilana. :)
Kleine Kämpfer sind das, die halten viel aus - auch in der Wüste kann es mal richtig richtig kalt werden nachts :-)
In der Wüste soll es ja auch durchaus mal sehr kalt werden.
Glaubt man gar nicht...
Interessant, hätte jetzt nicht gedacht, dass diese Pflanzen winterhart sind. Ich finde die Kaktusfeigen schön.
Die meisten Agaven und Kakteen sind es ja auch nicht ...
Irgendwie schon ein bisschen komisch die stacheligen Freunde im Schnee zu sehen :-) meine Eltern hatten auch einige im Garten und ich hatte jedes Jahr ein wenig Mitgefühl mit ihnen - also den Agaven - wenn der Schnee drauflag... sie haben es (fast) immer gut überstanden! Schicke ein kleines bisschen Mitgefühl an deine - und wünsche ihnen, dass der Winter nicht allzu hart wird! Herzliche Grüße aus dem Siebengebirge, wo der Schnee erstmal wieder weggeschmolzen ist
