Does Cannabis Promote Laziness? New Study Says Otherwise

in #cannabis7 years ago

Millions of people have the impression that cannabis promotes laziness and that those who smoke cannabis on a regular basis are going to be unproductive and likely just sit around all day smoking and snacking.

In some bizarre cases, anti-cannabis advocates actually think that cannabis promotes violence; but let's not take someone like Nancy Grace as any sort of cannabis expert. She's got an annoying knack for peddling ignorant fear-mongering about cannabis, as do many other television personalities.

With all of the cannabis movies out there today, it's no wonder that the public has gotten the impression that cannabis might prompt laziness. And certainly that might be the case for some individuals who consume it, but that isn't the case for every smoker.

A recent study by researchers in the US found that cannabis smokers were likely to be more successful than non-smokers. They also found that they were likely to be more satisfied in life.

In their study, they analyzed the lives of smokers in both Colorado and California. They investigated a number of mental factors, social factors, and financial details about the participants.

They also measured their overall life satisfaction, attitude toward parenting, employment information and more. And those who smoke regularly might not be surprised that the researchers discovered that for the smokers in these two regions, they are likely to be among the most satisfied and successful.

However, the results of the study might be comical to some, who remember that just last year another study came out and said that it had found the opposite: that marijuana does promote laziness and that users perform worse in areas of education and work.

Aside from happiness and success, the recent study also found that for cannabis consumers, they were more likely to volunteer their time, more so than those who rejected to consume cannabis.

The study was conducted by BDS Analytics, based in Colorado. They are a market leader when it comes to providing data and analytics regarding the cannabis market.

There might be many who want to simply smoke a joint and go to sleep, or relieve their pain and relax and enjoy their night. But that clearly isn't the case for everyone.

Take for example the cannabis-friendly gyms that are expected to open in California and perhaps across the nation. The one in California is rumored to be the very first of its kind and they want to provide an environment where customers feel free to smoke and workout. It's been suggested that mixing the cannabis with physical activity might be able to provide a number of benefits, from boosting recovery to enhancing focus and more.

Despite the fearmongering and warnings about cannabis, like studies suggesting it leads to harder drugs, and worse, people are still choosing to support the cannabis market. Millions of people around the US continue to turn toward trying the plant out for themselves.

It's already legalized in a majority of the US states and it's popular with a variety of age brackets, everyone from children using CBD and more for their epilepsy and elderly citizens turning to it to offer remedy for a myriad of different illnesses or symptoms that they suffer from.

This plant is incredible in the potential that is has to create wealth, create jobs, better our lifestyles. It can be used in thousands of different ways. And it is nothing but a detriment to our society to have government agents maintain their close-mindedness about cannabis (or hemp) and all that it has to offer the world.

Very interesting article. Did you know that in Aceh is also famous for marijuana? But here marijuana has been used since ancient times, for cooking spice and beef stew.

Cannabis is needed the medical world. Hopefully marijuana soon legalized.

it can help so many

Agree :)

It is already legalized in other states and remaining will follow. I guess.

Follow me @yehey

Only in 5 States, and the Feds still have it Schedule 1, on the level with Heroin which is absolutely ridiculous! De-Criminalization is crucial!

Such a well written story. A great way to support and share this information, and the scientific publication looks pretty interesting.

Definetly worth checking it out too.

You could claim that laziness promotes cannabis :D . I think many researchers try to find correlation between things and when they do, they consider it a fact. This is because somehow in their minds , they have already a predetermined result in their mind and try to find a way to prove it, something like reverse engineering.

I am not saying that they are wrong, i am just saying sometimes we,people, are too eager to prove something and try to grasp on something that would prove us right.

Seems very useful, but banned in many countries. But they are trying to ban many useful other things like guns or even cash

How are guns that useful? Nowhere near as useful as cannabis.

If you live next to people that want to kill you ...guns are useful

What you did to your neighbours to make them want to kill you!

lol ....me, personally - I am okay with my neighbors
but it depend on your neighbors ...some neighbors don't accept you as you are and just want you dead
If your neighbors are ISIS or North Korea or some other crazy entity - then you better have weapons to defend yourself

Yeah that's true. I don't think guns should be banned, but I think some regulation is good. I don't think many people would disagree that speed limits are bad.

I also agree ...guns should be controlled and regulated but , unfortunately, in some cases they are necessary

You need guns to protect your cannabis

wow thank you very informative,
great to see all the research now that legislation is changing once the medical benefits are fully realized by mainstream medical practitioners could end the pharmaceutical epidemic.

Great blog , i certainly believe that cannabis should be legalized world wide as it can treat various diseases .

tl;dr........joke.

great post.

💚 it!!! got a new supporter here! 😊 resteem!

Great post @doitvoluntarily. Thank You for sharing this. I've upvoted and share!

Not everybody uses and reacts to cannabis (much like anything else actually) differently. As anything, cannabis can be overdone by some and might enhance laziness for the already lazy ones. But most of the people I know who smoke, function pretty well and smoking allows them to be more balanced and actually more productive when working.

I still just cannot understand why the world does not do more research on this plant for healty reasons. In the Netherlands it is already getting more and more accepted for patients when in pain to smoke some. It is getting more and more accepted in the medical world

It is an amazing gift for us to have such a natural medicine. I believe in moderation, like anything else, but the fact is it does so much more good than harm :) thanks for this post and I'm following you

Cannabis doesn't make you lazy, unless you let it make you lazy.

Thank you for this article. I am right there with you trying to fight the stereotypes and connotations of a cannabis smoker. People can't believe I do all the stuff I do and I smoke every day

buen post, es interesante saberlo

Beautiful article! This is THE Plant that can save the World!

Great article @doitvoluntarily.. Upvoted!
Marijuana has been used recently by doctors here in China to treat some ailments.

I´m a simple person, i see post about pot, i upvote.

I get where you're coming from but I think a study like this is flawed. It is misusing semantics. I agree, cannabis doesn't cause laziness, but from what I see so many times is it makes one okay with being lazy.

not the case for everyone, some of the most hardworking and successful people I know smoke cannabis. There have been many creative and successful people who have smoked it, dozens of professional athletes, even Olympic athletes lol :)

and they used a pretty standard assessment/measurement tool to go about investigating income levels and life satisfaction among the other variables it was investigating.. how is it flawed other than you disagreeing w/ the outcome ? :)

To me it seems nitpicky. Now don't get me wrong, huge fan and I'm all for legalization and all the benefits it provides, I just think if different metrics were used such as something more linear the outcome wold be different.
It seems that the title is there to discuss laziness while the article shows income. But then for the same reason we can talk about cocaine. being expensive it's usually rich successful people who partake. That doesn't mean coke causes success, just that that is how some rich people like to have fun. Same for weed IMO,just a way for already successful people to relax

that doesn't make any sense... they assessed both smokers and non smokers and analyzed a variety of different categories using standard measurement tools, those taking part in the study also had no clue what the study was about, they were just ignorantly taking part and answering questions. There is nothing "nitpicky" about asking participants their income levels or life satisfaction, info about whether or not they volunteer etc, these are basic questions that are asked in thousands of psych studies.

A very well written and informative article. Thank you for sharing! Cannabis would always be the zombie in the society. It eats brains and turn the people into nobody as conciousness will deteriorate nevertheless it also has a great impact on the intervention of epilepys which the other country legalized that. Great on them. Anyway, Hope you could mind if you'd like to read an article about the deadliest disease in the philippines. https://steemit.com/health/@annesaya/alert-101-understanding-tuberculosis-the-deadliest-but-treatable-diseases-in-the-philippines. Thank you 😊 I'm your new follower 😊

Great article great picture cheers mate

Great post, I'm a big believer in hemp, cannabis, etc., plus in the bible, we allowed to use to aid and help mankind.

thanks for your comment / feedback :)

I'm a fairly busy and motivated person but one bit of weed and I lose all motivation. If I was high and my house was burning down I don't even know if I'd be able to spill a glass of water to try and put it out. That said it just means I smoke at night after I'm done with my work. Simple solution to a simple problem:)

sure sounds strong lol and probably indica and not sativa which doesn't have the same effect

I don't smoke often and when I order it they're always out of indica, but I've gotten some good mixed strains.

might want to get some indep testing and see what else mighta been in there haha ;) jk

lol I probably just smoked too much

How much do you smoke in one go? Maybe just smoke less

Usually a few joints over 5 hours but I'm extremely sensitive. One 50mg cookie sends me out to space with hallucinations and all that.

@doitvoluntarily nah I don't think so it's down to the individual if they lazy they will do nothing not the weed

it certainly wouldn't be the case for everyone :) but in their study they found it was the average in those two regions, interesting! :)

In my case it only makes me procrastinate, I smoked for 15 years, but just recently stopped, I would go to gym stoned, go running, work, I would do everything stoned I never believed it made me lazy.

Smoking cannabis can be healthy if you're doing it sometimes because it releaves stress hormones and acts like a rewarding mechanism. The danger of CB lays in smoking it too often. Usage of CB on a regular basis might lead to an addiction which forces you to take it more often.

majority of those who use it don't get hooked/"addicted", and funny enough it's been suggested as a treatment for addiction :)

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-truth-about-pot/

Yeah well what I meant was that it is very dangerous rewarding yourself to often with CB becuase then you might lose controll over your own rewarding mechanism. You won't be able to appreciate things you used to like in the same way, which might lead to a lower living desire.

Exactly my toughts! I smoked for a long time regularly and over the last months i just smoke sometimes and i can say I feel much better than smoking it daily! If you smoke it daily your tolerance will climb to much and it's getting realy, realy expensive! When you smoke let's say 1-2 per month it gives you so much more pleasure! Especially if you smoke the good stuff from Amsterdam like i did last week after a long time and i was feeling great! :)

awesome post ...legalize cannabis!!!!!
I say if not the one that has THC, at least, the cannabis that can be use for all the other purposes

lol, i never expected to say this but looks like cannabis should be legalized worldwide !!

Looks very interesting
Our society has a lot of hemp leaf garden

more reason to keep smoking weed. i like the successful bit, lol.

Woowww ,,,
weed
Do you consume that leaf!

Not always more successful however there are some smokers of cannabis are successful but not everyone
also cannabis doesn't always promote laziness it sometimes promotes activity, sadness, depression, happiness, hunger and some other things.
thanks for pointing to a matter like this bro.

This is such an interesting post. I personally am on the fence about the legalisation of marijuana having seen both positive and negative effects of cannabis use.

I think when it comes to determining whether it causes laziness.... i think it's very much down to individual circumstances and would be hard to prove or disprove the hypothesis. Some people smoke marijuana through boredom and because they are lazy...... are these the kinds of individuals who would participate in a psychological study?!

I have volunteered in an end of life hospice and seen first hand the positive effect that cannabis use can have (not legally i must say in the UK)

My paid work also means that I meet regular smokers on a daily basis and have seen some of the long term effects cannabis use can have. There have been various studies showing a positive correlation between diagnosis of schizophrenia and cannabis use and links with depression and paranoia. There are also links with domestic violence and cannabis use.

However given that alcohol use causes many more issues in society, I see the irony in societal avoidance to legalise cannabis use......

when it comes to our own bodies, shouldn't it be our choice to peacefully consume what we wish? ;)

Absolutely believe in freedom of choice. O think the key word in your sentence is peacefully and that works both ways. So the decision to smoke cannabis shouldn't have an impact on others. Unfortunately it can have an impact on mental health services, the police and excessive use can cause anti social behaviour. That being said a majority of people who choose to use cannabis do so responsibly and it is, like many other things, the irresponsible minority who create negative societal opiniom for the majority.

I am all for the freedom of choice.... I'm just on the fence about legalisation and whether it can be proven the cause and effect of cannabis use and laziness. Xxx

Cannot believe this nonsense study. Of course it makes you lazy and lethargic. It also makes you look like an idiot with red eyes. Seen it with other people, experienced it, quit it. Yes, it should be legalized...but this study is misleading and probably just a preparation for legalization / public acceptance.

Q: Does Cannabis make me lazy?
A: No
I have to answer that question with a resounding 'no' unless you rephrased it to:

Q: Does some Cannabis make me lazy?
A: Yes

So in order that I can answer 'No' to the question of laziness, it is essential I am able to buy across the counter so I can know what I am getting and can choose multiple strains for different purposes. That way I can prevent the effect of any one 'type' of strain from impacting my personality too heavily. If I smoke 'couch lock' Indica strains from morning to night then I would be lazy.

But I would choose a light Sativa to keep myself upbeat and focused on what I'm doing. A stronger Sativa might help if I was trying to be creative - but some are more creative than others. I perhaps would have a nice hybrid to get high socially with friends. And a strong indica for bedtime.

In my own experience, of having a busy career for all my adult life, the long term consumption of Sativa is the crucial part in not having cannabis affect your motivation. I think periods where I've only been able to get strong hybrids and indicas are definitely phases where I've got less done.

And in addition, I think it is important to not smoke from morning to night everyday, or you will probably have to combat laziness with strong coffee!

Cannabis does not make me lazy, i have adhd i feel more concentrated when on cannabis, now it is almost 10 years ago since i stopt with the medication Dexamfetamine.

Great post , I can see the positives in cannabis use, especially it medicinal purposes , but I think because of its addictive properties it wouldn't be beneficial in certain parts of society, as it would possibly cause more social problems and also long term negative effects on mental health .

So, that's why liberals smoke weed..........

people from all different walks of life/holding varying political viewpoints smoke cannabis lol :) even nuns!

Nuns even grow it!!!

Most people make pointless argument on the use of cannabis. Laziness is a choice, likewise crime. Cannabis can never make someone venture into crime. You only commit crime because you choose to. @doitvoluntarily. I'm at work right now but just rolled up a joint. Going out for a break. all my wake and bake peeps out there, you can join me if you care. #OneLove#Peace#

I've never understood the negative perception about marijuana. Granted it can be abused to the point of making someone lazy, but I mean other than that, the benefits are through the roof in its uses. My mom has MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and suffers with anxiety , its uses for medicine are so beneficial. Thanks for posting!

I think it's the opposite. You have to be lazy and narrow-minded to NOT try cannabis (:

Great post! I followed you :)
I smoked daily for a long time and i can say that it made me pretty lazy.. I wish i could turn back the clock. :/

A very good cannabis article. Of course need further research ... hopefully many benefits ...

For some reason, I always assumed Nancy Grace was an actress, typecast as a TV host who says controversial things...

There's a strong stereotype of cannabis consumers being hippies who mooch of their friends and live on a couch

yes but making such knee-jerk judgements can easily be wrong ;)

I would also blame the likes of seth rogen for promoting the stereotype in movies

but they also promote much entertainment and many laughs

Lol! Hell yeah!

Congratulations on this great article @doitvoluntarily
I came across your profile in an article about the users with most followers. You got the first place, and I decided to check your profile.
So now about this article. Lets do not forget that there are three species of cannabis - Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica and Cannabis ruderalis. Each one of them has different levels of CBD (Cannabidiol) and THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol).
The effects of sativa are well known for its cerebral high, while indica is well known for its sedative effects which some prefer for night time use.

I think it depends on what purpose you use it for and the type of strain you use . Some people prefer hybrid strains that are in the middle of laziness and being up. Personal experience : it's better to have an upper than a downer because you can get more done unless you're having a bad day and just want to sleep with a downer

Honestly, we are 24/7 covering cannabis and medical marihuana updates and news, but it looks like we've missed this aspect. Thanks for covering it!
