Violent Crime Is Down In Border States With Legal Weed

in #cannabis6 years ago (edited)

A study published in November of 2017 details the effect of medical marijuana laws on US crime in states which share a border with Mexico. The article shows that the introduction of laws legalizing marijuana for medical and recreational use has led to a decrease in violent crimes in those states. The largest reduction is in areas closest to the border, where many crimes relating to the trafficking of drugs have been most prominent.

In a nutshell, the legalization of cannabis in these areas has crippled the drug cartels that have been historically very powerful and active in those areas. Canada is legalizing cannabis this year, just in time for Canada Day. Mexico is set to legalize cannabis-based products this year, which is more than can be said for the United States as a whole.

I can't imagine how drug cartels wouldn't be seriously weakened by legalization in all of North America. I hope we get to find out some day, much to the chagrin of that half elf / half possum hybrid of an Attorney General, Jeff Sessions.
